PITTSBURGH -- Pirates rookie Josh Bell came up big again Sunday, but it wasnt enough this time.Bells baserunning helped Pittsburgh tie the score in the seventh, before Kris Bryants RBI double in the eighth lifted the Chicago Cubs to a 6-5 victory over the Pirates on Sunday. The Pirates tied the score at 5-5 after the Cubs failed to turn a double play off a dribbler from Starling Marte in the seventh. With Bell, who led off the inning with a walk, at second base and John Jaso at first, Marte grounded to shortstop Addison Russell as Bell ran back to second.Russell didnt tag Bell and instead handed off to second baseman Ben Zobrist, whose relay throw to first failed to beat Marte. First baseman Anthony Rizzo threw back across the diamond to third, where Bell avoided a tag from Javier Baez.Today, (Bell) made a very good baserunning play to throw it in reverse and to stay out of the tag, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. Then he was able to restart it and get to third base, that was very good baseball awareness and a very good play there. With runners on the corners and one out, Andrew McCutchen drove in Bell with a fly to deep right field. Reliever Pedro Strop ended the inning by getting David Freese on a fly ball.Bell, called up from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday, went 2-for-2 and reached base in each of his three pinch-hit at-bats during the weekend series. He singled off Cubs ace Jake Arrieta in his first career at-bat Friday and hit his first grand slam in the fifth inning Saturday.Im not sure he could have a better three at-bats, just based on what was out there for those at-bats, Hurdle said. Today, a lead-off at-bat against a guy thats an experienced guy, to stretch that out, it was good to see. He checked all the boxes we had for him when we called him up. It was to help as a bat off the bench and help us win some games.Pinch-hitter Matt Szczur doubled to left field with one out in the eighth against Pirates reliever Tony Watson (1-3). Bryant, who had three hits and reached base four times, followed with his tiebreaking hit to put the Cubs back ahead.I just go out and try to make something happen, Szczur said. I was able to get a good pitch to drive and (Bryant) did the rest. . Weve been grinding, were a bunch of grinders, so that was a good way to end the first half. We feel good about ourselves.Chicago avoided a series sweep ended its five game losing streak. Pittsburgh lost for just the second time in 11 games heading to the All-Star break. With the win, the Cubs carry a seven-game lead over the second-place St. Louis Cardinals into the break. We need a break, Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. We need to get guys rested. The combination of the schedule and, more specifically, the last week with the way games were scheduled, it put us in a fatigue situation. After Strop (2-2) gave up McCutchens tying sacrifice fly in the seventh, Carl Edwards pitched a hitless eighth and Hector Rondon got the last three outs for his 14th save.Strop had come in for starter John Lackey, who had another inconsistent outing. After allowing four runs in his first three innings, which included McCutchens 14th home run of the season and his second in two days, Lackey rebounded by shutting down the Pirates through the following three innings.Lackey lost his control again when he walked Bell and allowed Jaso to follow with a single to start the seventh inning.Pirates starter Jonathan Niese fared worse, giving up five earned runs in 3 2/3 innings. He was pulled in favor of Arquimedes Caminero in the fourth inning after surrendering a two-run home run to Albert Almora Jr., retiring the following two batters and allowing back-to-back hits to Bryant and Rizzo in top of the fourth inning.Niese has lost five of his past six starts and is 7-7 after beginning the season 6-2.TRAINERS ROOMCubs: OF Dexter Fowler will miss the All-Star Game on Tuesday and likely some time following the break. The defense had to step up.Carney got past Miami left tackle Trevor Darling, hit Kaaya from behind to force the turnover and Elijah Hoods 13-yard run for a first down with 1:02 left sealed it for the Tar Heels (5-2, 3-1). Mitch Trubisky threw for 299 yards and two touchdowns for North Carolina, while Bug Howard had 10 catches for 156 yards for North Carolina. Its a huge bounce-back game for us, coming down on the road against a very good opponent, said Trubisky, whose team was embarrassed by Virginia Tech 34-3 last weekend while Hurricane Matthew poured down.Mark Walton rushed for 82 yards and Joe Yearby ran for 74 more and a touchdown for Miami (4-2, 1-2), which has now dropped two straight by a total of eight points. The Hurricanes lost to Florida State 20-19 last week.We need all 11 guys doing the right thing, said Kaaya, who completed 16 of 31 passes for 224 yards. It starts with me.Kaaya was asked if his shoulder, which limited him in practice this week, was bothering him.No. No. No, Kaaya said.North Carolina converted 14 of its 23 third-down opportunities.I thought that was decisive, Miami defensive coordinator Manny Diaz said.North Carolina now sits atop the ACCs Coastal Division , a half-game ahead of Virginia Tech and Pittsburgh.Im pretty pleased with where this team is right now, where we sit and the job that theyve done, said North Carolina coach Larry Fedora, whose club won the Coastal last season.Miamis 2001 team -- the last to win a national title for the Hurricanes and arguably one of the best college teams ever assembled -- was honored at halftime, with coach Larry CCoker running out of the traditional smoke first and followed by players who trotted from one of the end zones.ddddddddddddThey got some cheers, though considering they took the field with Miami down 20-3, the reception was muted. There werent any adjustments in the second half, Miami safety Rayshawn Jenkins said. We had to come out and play the best football of our lives to have a chance to win.It was 10-0 North Carolina after one quarter after a touchdown catch by Austin Proehl, and Ryan Switzer made it 20-3 when he hauled in a 1-yard pass with 18 seconds left before halftime. Miamis defense didnt allow a point in the second half, highlighted by stopping the Heels on the Hurricane 1 to open the fourth quarter. It may not seem like it by our record, Miami coach Mark Richt said, but I do think were making progress.THE TAKEAWAYNorth Carolina: The Tar Heels were flagged for false starts seven times. ... Switzer had a very strange stat line: 9 catches, 17 yards. But it was a historic line. The nine catches made him North Carolinas record-holder for career receptions with 206, passing Quinshad Davis.Miami: Injuries are now a huge problem for Miami, which wasnt particularly deep to start the season. Defensive linemen Chad Thomas and Demetrius Jackson were knocked out of the game with injuries, and linebacker Michael Pinckey was shaken up twice -- but returned both times. The Hurricanes defense was so depleted that some players not even on the two-deep saw action in the second half.POLL IMPLICATIONSIts hard to envision Miami remaining in the AP Top 25 after two straight losses, meaning the Hurricanes would go from No. 10 to unranked in two weeks -- the first time since 1968 that the program would go from top 10 to out so rapidly. North Carolina is likely to return to the poll for the second time this month and third time this season.UP NEXTNorth Carolina: The Tar Heels resume their Coastal stretch, going to Virginia next Saturday.Miami: The Hurricanes play at Virginia Tech on Thursday night.
