BOSTON -- Wins are a lot tougher to come by when you dont have a Vezina Trophy winner between the pipes.Thats the case for the Boston Bruins right now.Bostons No. 1 goalie,?Tuukka Rask, is listed as day-to-day with an undisclosed injury that he suffered in a 2-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils last Thursday in the Bruins home opener. Its the first time in his career that Rask has suffered any type of serious injury, and his status remains uncertain. Backup Anton Khudobin was felled by an upper-body injury during Mondays practice and will be sidelined at least three weeks. With both goalies hurt, the Bruins are in a bind. Coach Claude Julien had no choice other than to go with inexperience in goal against the?Minnesota Wild?on Tuesday and it resulted in a 5-0 loss to the Wild at TD Garden. Rookies?Malcolm Subban and Zane McIntyre?both played. To be fair: Bostons goaltending wasnt the only reason for the blowout loss. The Bruins had too many defensive breakdowns and zero offensive punch. Thats not a recipe for success. It shouldnt matter which goalie is playing, captain Zdeno Chara?said.Injuries are a part of the game, but we should really respect the way we play and what we want to accomplish and how we want to play, Chara said. If were not going to do that, it doesnt really matter who is in net. Its really up to us as players to make sure we play in the right way on the right side of the puck. If we do that, were going to make the game much better for us.The Bruins cant afford to fall too far behind in the standings this early in the season. So what will Boston general manager?Don Sweeney do if Rask is sidelined long-term? After Tuesdays loss, Julien said he did not have an update on the 29-year-old veteran. Both Subban and McIntyre were preparing to travel with the team to New York to face the Rangers on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.Subbans only previous NHL experience was a start in St. Louis on Feb. 20, 2015, when he allowed three goals on six shots before he was pulled after 31:15 of ice time in a 5-1 loss. On Tuesday, in his second NHL game, he allowed three goals on 16 shots before he was pulled after 26:31 of ice time and replaced by McIntyre, who had been called up from Providence earlier in the day.Yeah, it sucks, Subban said. Obviously, Im just trying to finish the game, let alone win one. It sucks, but what can you do now, right?Subban, 22, hasnt been the same since he suffered a fractured larynx during a minor league game last February. The injury ended his season with Providence. Before being struck in the throat by a puck in Portland, Maine, Subban had won 9 of 11 games and allowed only 21 goals during that span. Overall, he was 14-8-5 with a .911 save percentage in 27 games for Providence during 2015-16.At the time of his recall on Monday, he was 0-3-1 with a 4.50 goals-against average in four games for the Bruins AHL affiliate this season. The road has always seemed blocked for Subban, who was a first-round selection (No. 24 overall) in 2012 by the Bruins. It doesnt help his cause that Rask is the No. 1 goalie in Boston and is in the fourth year of an eight-year contract worth $56 million.I want to be a No. 1 goaltender in the league. I was a high pick for a reason. I have the potential, I just have to show it, Subban said. I havent done that so far yet, but I think Im getting closer to it. I think I can do it right now and obviously I didnt do it [Tuesday], but tomorrows a new day. While Subban was having success statistically in the AHL -- having a winning record in each of his three full seasons in Providence -- some hockey personnel wondered if his game would translate to the next level. Some question his consistency.I dont like the structure of his game, one Eastern Conference evaluator said. He seems like a guy who could fall apart when hes not on his game. From a defensive standpoint, Subban got little help. With the exception of?Brandon Carlo,?Bostons defensemen have struggled. Will McIntyre fare any better? The Bruins are about to find out. He will make his first NHL start on Wednesday. With Rask in net, the Bruins know theyre getting a calm, reliable performance. Without its No. 1, it looks like Boston is in for a struggle. Tarvarius Moore Super Bowl Jersey . By having more great seasons. MINNEAPOLIS -- Rick Porcello kept up the starting pitching surge Detroit has been riding all season. Prince Fielder came through with another clutch hit, and Jose Valverde even had a stress-free appearance to try to get back on track. This is the way the Tigers wanted to start the series in Minnesota. Fielder broke open a scoreless game with a two-run double in the sixth inning, the spark that Porcello and the Tigers used to beat the Twins 4-0 on Friday night. Despite his status as the afterthought of this stacked rotation behind Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, Anibal Sanchez and Doug Fister, Porcello has shined in his last four appearances. He is 2-1 with 30 strikeouts in 27 innings and just 15 hits, five runs and four walks against him during that stretch. "Ive honestly really felt confident all year," Porcello said. "I like what Ive been working on, especially in the off-season going into spring training, and Im starting to get some good results from it now." Victor Martinez and Jhonny Peralta followed Fielders soaring drive with RBI doubles of their own, ending the night for Twins starter Scott Diamond (4-6). Even better for the Tigers was that the four-run cushion kept sputtering closer Jose Valverde out of a pressurized save situation. "He wanted to be back out there tonight, and he wasnt shy about it," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. Porcello (4-3) didnt need much relief. The right-hander breezed through seven scoreless innings, allowing just two singles and one double without a walk. He struck out five and gave the Tigers their 19th quality start (of at least six innings and three runs or less) in the last 20 games. "Porcello was unbelievable. The last couple starts, hes been doing great. The breaking ball and two-seamer hes throwing, its awesome," Valverde said. Diamond walked Austin Jackson, the leadoff man back in his familiar spot after he missed the last month because of a pulled left hamstring, with one out in that decisive sixth. Torii Hunter advanced Jackson with a groundout, and Miguel Cabrera was intentionally walked. "Diamond matched him for a long time there," said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire, lamenting the leadoff walk: "He got some balls up after that." Fielder made the Twins pay. "Hes done a terrific job of picking us up in that situation when its happened. Terrific job. Tonight, off a left-hander, thats really special," Leyland said. With one of those huge upper-cut swings, he smacked a 2-0 curveball high off the towering right-field wall to put the Tigers in front. Cabrera ran tthrough the stop sign by third base coach Tom Brookens, whose arms were still straight up in the air as the big slugger chugged home without a throw.dddddddddddd "Were a team that slugs it pretty good, and when we slug it pretty good we look pretty good," Leyland said. Valverde came in for the ninth after Drew Smyly and Joaquin Benoit collaborated on a scoreless eighth. Valverde walked Joe Mauer to start the inning, but Ryan Doumit followed with a double-play ground ball. Josh Willingham was grazed by a pitch, but Justin Morneau struck out looking to end the game. "Its great for me and great for my teammates to be on the mound and have my confidence again," said Valverde, who allowed 10 hits, seven runs and five homers over his last six appearances while blowing two of his five save opportunities. Valverde gave up a tying, two-run homer to Kansas Citys Lorenzo Cain with two outs in the ninth inning on Wednesday, a game the Tigers lost in the 10th. Detroits bullpen, the one glaring area of concern on this otherwise-championship-calibre club, has a 4-12 record with eight squandered saves in 22 chances. Leyland bristled at a question about whether Valverde was still the closer, angrily lacing his answer with expletives before eventually affirming the veteran right-handers status. "Were going to use Jose Valverde until we decide Jose Valverde can or cant do it or weve got somebody else better," Leyland said. The skipper tried to suggest too much attention has been fixated on his relievers, noting the Tigers have had some recent trouble scoring. While losing two of three to the Royals they had seven runs in 28 innings. But the Tigers still have the best batting average in baseball, at .281 entering the night. Diamond, who was replaced with two outs in the sixth, gave up five hits and two walks with just one strikeout. The six scoreless innings he pitched on June 2 fueled his lone victory of the last seven turns. That is also the only time in that span he finished six innings. NOTES: Valverde was warming up on the field before the game, working on the split-fingered fastball that has been hit hard lately. ... Willingham, the regular in left field, was the DH for the Twins for the fourth straight time to rest his sore knees as much as possible. ... Sanchez (6-5, 2.65 ERA) will pitch for the Tigers on Saturday against RH Samuel Deduno (2-1, 3.47 ERA) of the Twins. Sanchez took a no-hitter one out into the ninth inning the last time he faced the Twins, in Detroit on May 24. He sat out his previous start because of tightness in his shoulder. ' ' '
