LOS ANGELES -- The joyous occasion expected when the Los Angeles Kings kick off their 50th anniversary season in the NHL on Friday night at Staples Center against the Philadelphia Flyers will be somewhat muted with the loss of standout goaltender Jonathan Quick.Quick was placed on injured reserve Thursday in what the Kings believe is a significant injury to his lower back. Quick was hurt in the first period of Wednesdays 2-1 defeat by the San Jose Sharks. Although results of an MRI werent available, club officials say Quick is week-to-week, meaning the goalie could miss a large chunk of playing time.Quick, one of the most durable goalies, led all NHL netminders with more than 4,000 minutes logged and was a finalist for the Vezina Trophy last season. Without question, his absence leaves a huge void.Jonathans obviously a special player, Kings coach Darryl Sutter told the media after Thursdays practice. You just dont replace that. Its no different than any other star player in your lineup. You just dont replace it or expect somebody to play the same way or do the same things, but we also know that were quite capable at that position.Jeff Zatkoff, who replaced Quick against the Sharks, is scheduled to start against Philadelphia. Zatkoff saved 15 of 16 shots in the setback to San Jose. He was 4-7 in 11 starts last season for the defending champion Pittsburgh Penguins, recording a postseason win en route to their Stanley Cup title. The Kings recalled Peter Budaj from Ontario to serve as Zatkoffs backup. Budaj earned a league-high 42 victories and nine shutouts in the AHL last season. In addition to Quick, the Kings will be without wingers Marian Gaborik and Tanner Pearson. Gaborik will miss at least another month with a broken right foot, while Pearson will serve his fourth and final game of a suspension for an illegal check in an exhibition contest. The Flyers, who will be making their season debut, are led by center Claude Giroux and right winger Wayne Simmonds. Giroux led the Flyers with 67 points (22 goals, 45 assists) last season, and Simmonds produced 60 points and scored a club-best 32 goals. The Flyers have high expectations. Our goal is to win the Stanley Cup, said Giroux, according to Philly.com. We know its a process. We know its not going to happen overnight. But were putting in the work, and I think the last three years weve learned a lot. We have a lot of guys that have been here the last three years and every year we keep learning. Two players who will not play at Los Angeles are defensemen Radko Gudas and Michael Del Zotto. Gudas was suspended six games for interference in a preseason game. Del Zotto sustained a lower body injury in an exhibition contest that will keep him on the shelf four to five weeks. The Kings will honor their inaugural 1967-68 club, which played the franchises first game on Oct. 14, 1967 against the Flyers at Long Beach Arena. Fourteen members of the team will be feted in a pregame celebration. TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Arizona Cardinals were still gathering information Monday afternoon about wide receiver Michael Floyds arrest on multiple charges after he was found asleep at the wheel of his car.Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said during his Monday news conference that he had spoken with Floyd to gather the facts of what happened and determine what our options are going forward. Arians said he believed the team and league cant hand down formal punishment to Floyd until the case has run its course.Well determine all that at a later date, said Arians, who said he expects to have more information when he meets the media Wednesday.Floyd was found behind the wheel of his vehicle at an intersection in Scottsdale at 2:48 a.m. Monday. He was charged with obstructing a roadway, DUI impaired to the slightest degree, DUI with a blood-alcohol concentration over .08 and failure to obey a police officer. He was booked and then released from the Scottsdale jail at 4:55 a.m.Arians said that no teammates were with Floyd. We always talk about not being the guy and making correct decisions, Arians said.In the last year of his contract, Floyd is on pace to have the worst statistical season of his five-year career.dddddddddddd The former first-round pick has 33 catches for 446 yards - a pace of 41 catches and 549 yards, both career lows.Arians called Floyds season very inconsistent and declined to comment on how it could impact his future being in a contract year.Thats too obvious, Arians said.As word spread throughout the locker room Monday, some of his teammates said that while they didnt know enough to offer an expanded comment about the incident, they thought Floyd was a good person. Its unfortunate, defensive tackle Frostee Rucker said. Im sure hell learn from it. I dont know everything about it but Mikes a good kid and I hope he learns from it, and I wish him all the best.Fellow defensive lineman Calais Campbell expressed his hope that Floyd can get through the incident.Just hope hes OK, Campbell said. Great guy. Love playing with him. Just hope hes OK. I dont really know much about the whole situation. I havent had a chance to talk to him yet. Mikes a great teammate. ' ' '
