SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah continued its early-season onslaught Friday with its third consecutive 40-plus point win.Lorenzo Bonam scored 19 points as the Utes rolled over a weary Coppin State team 94-51. Utah has now won its first three games by a combined 130 points. Its a tough stretch for those guys and they didnt have a whole lot in the way of legs, Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak said. Were just trying to learn how to respect the game regardless of who it is were playing. And the price of pokers going to go up.The energy and effort, that type of thing has been there for us. Now weve got to combine that with quite a bit more complicated scouting report, be able to engage the brain and body and everything at the same time. Thatll be a challenge for us.The Utes opened the game with a 19-3 run and never looked back as their 3-point shooters had their best stretch of the season. Utah shot 64.3 percent from behind the arc in the first half, including three triples apiece from Parker Van Dyke and Jake Connor. Van Dyke matched his career high with 15 points. On the flip side, Coppin State seemed gassed from the beginning as it played its third game in three nights. The Eagles shot just 26.9 percent from the field in the first half, making it impossible to keep up with the dead-eye Utes.Utah transfer JoJo Zamora scored a season-high 22. The Utes connected on a season-high 12 3-pointers.Coppin State has played five games in eight days, all in different cities. The Eagles also wrapped up their third consecutive game in three nights -- Coastal Carolina, BYU and Utah. All three games were 30-plus point losses.Tre Thomas, Dejuan Clayton and Keith Shivers scored a team-high 10 apiece for Coppin State. These are going to be life experiences for these guys, Coppin State coach Michael Grant said. You have to prepare yourself mentally every single day. Every time you step out here on the floor, you have to be ready to play. We havent been getting that.We have to look in the mirror. They have to assess where they are and find a way to grind this thing out because the road is not going anywhere. The schedule is not going anywhere. This is the hand were dealt.BIG PICTURECoppin State: The Eagles are in the money-making portion of their season, traveling the country for paydays against more talented programs. The conference season is what matters for Coppin State and it doesnt start MEAC play until January.Utah: The Utes continue to use the early part of the season to grow a roster with just two significant contributors from last season. The first half was their best 20 minutes of the season, but the level of competition didnt allow for a good feel of Utahs progress.NEW STARTERUtah forward Tyler Rawson started the first game of his Utes career after transferring from Salt Lake Community College. Rawson has been the second-leading scorer through the first two games and had six points, a game-high 12 rebounds and six assists Friday. Jayce Johnson moved to the bench and Krystkowiak said it wasnt a punishment, but Johnson has had some mental breakdowns in games.Im going to be mixing some stuff up, probably, throughout the course of the year, Krystkowiak said. Tylers had some good practice, thats been another factor. Starting doesnt mean much to me.UP NEXTCoppin State: The Eagles travel to play Ball State on Monday as part of 11 of 12 games on the road to start the season.Utah: The Utes continue their early, soft nonconference schedule when they host UC Riverside on Friday Brandon Clarke Jersey . But Hingis, a five-time Grand Slam singles champion, insists her return will only be in doubles and not singles. The 32-year-old Hingis began her second comeback to the tour Wednesday, teaming with Daniela Hantuchova for a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Julia Goerges and Darija Jurak in the Southern California Open. Hingis has retired twice previously, the first time in early 2003 at 22 and the last time in November 2007. "I always had it in the back of my head in the last six years," said Hingis, who has been coaching for the last two years. "Now, being so much closer to it, being closer to the game, closer to the matches, I was like lets try it again and see if I can have a great time." Her last WTA match was a second-round loss to Chinas Peng Shuai at an event in Beijing in September 2007. But recent comments made by current tennis commentator Lindsay Davenport, the three-time Grand Slam champion and former No. 1 ranked player, that Hingis was using the doubles comeback to launch a full-fledge return to singles later this fall, has fueled rampant speculation. All of which the "Swiss Miss" swatted away like a weak second serve. "Its a different world," said Hingis, a recent inductee into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. "Even Team Tennis now, its brutal. Its only one set, but still like the next day I wake up and you have to put so much more effort into it. Playing tournaments, thats the easy part. Its all the grind behind it, behind the scenes that people dont see. The six straight hours of training. At 17, everything seemed to be so easy. Now. Im almost twice the age." Hingis just completed her second season of playing Team Tennis, leading the Washington Kastless to the championship and earning her second consecutive MVP award, all of which has her ready for her next return.dddddddddddd "Its kind of weird just to play doubles," Hingis said. "Team Tennis always gets you in great shape. Being the MVP, that helps, I guess, the confidence. I played a lot more the last two years than I did in the first three years when I stopped." Hingis schedule after the Southern California Open includes two more warm-up tournaments at Toronto and Cincinnati before playing the U.S. Open, all with Hantuchova. "I dont have any expectations," Hingis said. "Obviously, I wouldnt put myself in this position if I didnt feel fine enough to be able compete at this level. Well see. Team Tennis, it was good enough. Will it be good enough in this world? Its another question." Hingis, who won 43 career singles titles, was also an accomplished doubles player with nine Grand Slam titles, including a calendar-year Grand Slam in 1998, and 37 doubles titles overall. A chronic ankle injury forced Hingis into her first retirement in 2003 and she was sidelined three years before she launched her first comeback in 2006. But her return fell far short of the standard set by the woman who held the No. 1 spot for 209 weeks, fourth longest in WTA history. Hingis was nothing close to the player who was the youngest Grand Slam singles winner at 16 years, three months when she captured the Australian Open in 1997 and later became the youngest female player to ascend to the No. 1 ranking. Hingis ended her first comeback under a cloud of controversy after she revealed in November 2007 that she tested positive for cocaine after losing in the third round at Wimbledon that year. Although Hingis professed her innocence, she said she was retiring rather than fighting the charges. ' ' '
