SAN JOSE, Calif. -- As the red, white and blue confetti fell inside the SAP Center on Sunday night, Aly Raisman reached out her right hand and called for her fellow new U.S. Olympians to join in on a quick team cheer. At 22, they call Raisman Grandma. And this determined, ultra-focused grandmother gymnast will be leading the Americans into another Olympics with all the kids, even if she wasnt so sure as she waited for the official announcement. We were joking, I was like, `I really am going to live up to my grandma name because Im going to have a heart attack before they announce the names, Raisman said of the excruciating minutes before the five gymnasts got final word.Teammate and three-time world champion Simone Biles wasted no time with a witty response: Were too young to die. So no heart attacks will take place in this arena tonight. On balance beam, her third rotation of the night Sunday, Raisman shined and looked nothing short of superbly confident. She let out a tiny breath before her dismount on a spectacular routine that scored a 15.250 -- much stronger than her 14.8 in Fridays opening night of the Olympic Trials. She wound up in third place with a 119.750 over the two-day, eight-rotation competition. The unflappable Raisman secured her hard-earned spot from national team coordinator Martha Karolyi with a strong showing over the past six weeks, which included an all-around victory in last months Hartford tune-up meet.Karolyi wanted to see strides from Raisman on floor exercise, beam and vault -- and was clearly convinced the 2012 U.S. captain at the London Games and defending Olympic champion on floor is poised for a strong run in Rio. She is joined on the team by Biles, reigning Olympic all-around champion Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez and Madison Kocian.Raisman and Douglas are the first female U.S. gymnasts during Karolyis tenure to make their Olympic debuts and be selected to return four years later for another run.Its just amazing because shes so strong, Douglas said of Raisman. To have her just lead this team, weve been there, and for us to be back on this road together is just amazing and kind of different because we were on the same team and now were on the same team again. Its just a special bond.Raisman was the oldest on the U.S. team when she won the floor at the London Olympics and captained the close-knit Fierce Five group that captured the team title. Its very important theyre on the team to support us and we can go to them because they know exactly what its like, the 19-year-old Biles said of Douglas and Raismans experience factor. When Sundays event had finally wrapped up, an orange foam massage roller tucked under her right arm, Raisman made her exit from the competition area with waves and then an ultra-quick smile before disappearing behind a curtain to wait for the decision. All evening, cheers of Come on, Aly! greeted her from little girls voices in every corner of the arena. A stone-faced Raisman seemed to block out everything as she prepared for her second rotation on uneven bars. She switched from hands on hips to swaying side to side, pacing back and forth to the chalk trough, then working in a quick quad stretch here and there.Minutes later, Raisman, in a sequin-studded red leotard, finally smiled after her 14.3 on her weakest event.Even on her No. 1 apparatus -- floor -- the reigning Olympic gold medalist on her favorite event realizes there is work she still must do. Douglas, too, and they will get back to work -- together again -- to add some tenths to their scores, to fine tune the smallest of details before the biggest world stage beckons in South America a few weeks from now.Raisman stepped out on her first floor pass but recovered and scored a 15.050, offering waves in every direction of the arena as she stepped down from the floor. After taking an extended break post-London, which included a Dancing With The Stars stint, Raisman only returned to competition in March 2015.So, this Rio trip was no guarantee in the short, ever-diminishing window that can define elite gymnastics. It is an accomplishment she will celebrate, and once her long day was done Sunday, she let down her guard and let the emotions flow. She cried. It was such a relief because it was so nerve-wracking, she said. I was so nervous this competition.Even Karolyi shed some tears, telling her gymnasts it was the toughest team decision yet for the U.S. selection committee. If I can make an event final, thats great, Raisman said. But right now Im just really focused on being a good captain and also just making sure we do a good job in the team final. KINGSTON, R.I. -- A total of 364 days elapsed between games for No. 23 Rhode Islands E.C Matthews.Matthews, who missed all but 10 minutes of last season after tearing his right ACL, played like he never missed any time as he scored 21 points Friday night to key an 84-61 victory over Dartmouth in the season opener for both teams. It was amazing just being out there with my teammates, Matthews said after connecting on 75 percent (9-for-12) of his shots. I almost forgot because its been so long. You could feel the excitement in the air.Coach (Dan Hurley) had to calm me down. He called me last night to let me know just to let it come. It felt good to be back. Ive been doing this my whole life. Just being comfortable and reading and reacting and having a good pace are important.Matthews was one of a trio of Rams who scored in double figures.Hassan Martin recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Kuran Iverson added 11 points.Rhode Islands suffocating, man-to-man defense also factored in the Rams lop-sided victory. We got separation in the second half, Hurley said. We played a level of defense that was an elite defense. We held them to 35 percent from the field and forced 20 turnovers. Thats kind of who we are.The Big Green, who trailed 39-26 at halftime, was led by Evan Boudreauxs 14 points and Guilen Smiths 13.We got off to a slow start on defense, Hurley said. I thought we were jittery to start. At the first timeout we did not do a real good job but then we picked it up.We were hoping to have 22 to 24 steals. We wanted to keep them under 38 percent from the field and we did that. But our defense has to be an elite defense for us. We have a lot of athletes. We come at people in waves.BIG PICTUREDartmouth: First-year head coach Dave McLaughlin inherits a team that was 10-18 last season and includes six freshmen on its roster. In order for the Big Green to qualify for the Ivy Leagues first-ever, post-season tournament (the top four teams qualify) theyll have to improve on last seasons sixth-pplace finish.dddddddddddd.Rhode Island: After defeating Dartmouth, the Rams play home games against Marist College and Brown University which should give coach Dan Hurley an idea of the players he can count on to play meaningful minutes. That will be important because the Rams play a potential Top 25-calibre team in Cincinnati at the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament at the Mohegan Sun Arena on November 19.POLL IMPLICATIONS: A lop-sided victory could ensure that Rhode Island remains ranked in the Top 25 and that the Rams may move up a notch in the next poll.STAT OF THE NIGHT: Rhode Island had 11 assists, turned the ball over 11 times and blocked 11 shots.STAR WATCH: Hassan Martin began the game as Rhode Islands career leader in field goal percentage (57.3 percent). That percentage should go up a couple of decimal points because Martin only missed one of his six shots.TURNING POINT: Rhode Island led 32-24 with 4:02 left in the first half when Christion Thompson stole the ball and went coast-to-coast for a dunk. That play ignited a 21-6 run which gave the Rams a 53-30 lead. Dartmouth failed to get closer than the final score.ROLE PLAYER: Sophomore Nicole Akele came off the bench to score nine points in 17 minutes. Even though this only was one game, Akeles play may be an indication of Rhode Islands depth.SAME OLD STORY: The Big Green committed 401 turnovers last season and ranked seventh in the Ivy League in assist-to-turnover ratio. Dartmouth repeated that scenario by turning the ball over 20 times and assisting on only six baskets.UP NEXT;Dartmouth: The Big Green return home on November 15 to host Fairfield in another non-conference game. The Stags are coming off a 19-victory season during which they earned a post-season berth.Rhode Island: The Rams host Marist College on November 14.
