There is one common thread amongst all MMA fights. If one fighter gases, he usually gets beat up pretty bad from that point on. My experience says there is no feeling worse than being man handled by a professional MMA fighter. As a strength coach, I like to actively train with the fighters I work with. Well I used to. As long as I live, I will never forget the feeling of working out and wrestling for the first time with Lew Polley, Jesse Taylor, Thierry Sokoudjou, Dan Henderson, and Tarec Saffiedine. My first time working at Quest as a strength coach had me learning a lot about wrestling. I took part in an "easy session" and at the end of the15 minute warm-up, I got teamed up with Hendo. I was tired, he was just starting. At 20 minutes I had been tossed more than 20 times, and had tapped to his clinch. There was more. Next stop was Sokoudjou. At 21 minutes into practice, my "friend" tossed me about three feet with the fastest hip toss Id ever seen. I laid on the mat in a pool of sweat, needed a minute to love life again. While I took some deep breaths Sokoudjou skipped. We got a new partner ever five minutes. I was everyones "break". It went on like this for 39 more minutes, one beating to another. Single leg takedown drills, wrestling for top position. I never once threatened anyone for position. I did however, threaten to throw up on Jesse. I think back to that practice every time I train in the gym. I realize that no matter how physically fit I get, its a whole different world to be on a mat and working with pros. The sport of MMA is unbelievably physically demanding. To this day, four years later, I have not been able to mirror the intensity. There is one solid trick to try to get as close as possible. Disrupt your breathing. If you have never played sports with a mouth guard then you have missed out on something special. However, the athletes I work with in MMA are using a brand new guard by SISU and its a game changer. The athletes can actually breath, talk, and drink while its in. Putting in a mouth guard while you run is the most basic way to change your breathing, and raise the intensity. If you jump to YouTube, you can see some of my videos where I train with the "Training Mask". The goal is not to create high altitude training, the goal is to make it tough to get a full deep breath. That forces your intercostal muscles, and diaphragm to work harder. Its the same situation as having a 200 + lbs MMA superstar on your chest, or with their arms digging into your ribs. When that happens, you cant get a full breath. When you do your sprint training, try putting in a mouth guard or incorporating a training mask device. That was the focus for me this week. Tuesday and Thursday I did my cardio sessions with a SISU mouth guard, and they went like this. 10 minutes to warm up on the treadmill, adjust to the mouth guard. - 8 x 20 second on 10 second rest sprints on the treadmill. 10 on incline, and fast as safely possible- 8 x 30 second on 30 seconds of rest bike sprints- Then back to the treadmill- 4 x 30 second of back peddling 15 seconds of rest. Incline at 6 and as fast as safely possible- Then a 5 minutes jog without a mouth guard, and then 5 minutes to cool down Takes roughly 30 minutes to get it all done. It feels terrible while its going on, but the recover and energy burst from finishing will be a huge boost to your entire day. I said it before in this article, you cant boo any athlete until you try the basics of the training. Most pros can do this type of cardio with their eyes closed. They gas out because there is nothing that can prepare them for the entire event, and the intensity of being in a real life fight. Try this in your training, and get just a small taste of what its like to be as fit as a fighter. Add a mouth guard, or a training mask. Next week, Im breaking out the weight vest. Its time to get to the next level. Justin Jones Jersey . Dane Dobbie had four goals and two assists, Karsen Leung had two goals and two assists, and Matthew Dinsdale scored two and helped on another for Calgary (6-3). They always do. Asdrubal Cabrera hit his first home run for Washington and tumbled over a retaining wall to make a terrific catch, leading the Nationals past the New York Mets 3-2 Wednesday night for their 10th straight victory in Queens. "Were going to have games like this every once in a while. The fact that we were able to overcome it is key," manager Matt Williams said. "We were fortunate tonight." Rafael Soriano held on in the ninth following Travis dArnauds leadoff homer, getting the final two outs after the Mets put a pair of runners in scoring position. Matt den Dekker was thrown out at home on pinch-hitter Eric Campbells grounder to shortstop -- and the call was upheld after a replay review to determine whether catcher Wilson Ramos blocked the plate illegally. Curtis Granderson hit a comebacker on the next pitch, giving Soriano his 27th save in 31 tries. "Weve got the best bullpen in the game," starter Jordan Zimmermann said. Bryce Harper and Kevin Frandsen each hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh to make a winner of Zimmermann (8-5), who did not permit an earned run or a walk in 6 1-3 innings. Drew Storen pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom half, and the NL East leaders won for the 24th time in their last 28 road games against the Mets dating to Sept. 12, 2011. They havent lost in Queens since June 29 last year. "Come out of here kind of feeling like you stole one," Adam LaRoche said. "Luckily our pitchers in a few innings made some big pitches when we needed them. Kind of bailed our defence out, which has been pretty solid." Washington has outscored the Mets 70-20 during the winning streak at Citi Field, which ties a franchise record for the longest at one venue away from home. The Montreal Expos won 10 road games in a row against the Chicago Cubs from 1982-83. "This is a tough one because they gave us a chance to beat them tonight," New York manager Terry Collins said. Coming off his 200th career win last Friday, Mets starter Bartolo Colon (11-10) allowed two runs -- one earned -- in seven innings. Leading 1-0, Colon gave up a leadoff double in the seventh to LaRoche. LaRoche stopped at third on a single to centre by Ian Desmond, who advanced to second when Juan Lagares high throw ticked off the glove of cutoff man Lucas Duda for an error.dddddddddddd That ended up hurting the Mets. Harper tied it with a sacrifice fly, Ramos singled and Frandsen put the Nationals ahead with another sacrifice fly. "One bad pitch and they took advantage," Colon said through a translator. Cabrera connected in the eighth off Jeurys Familia. The two-time All-Star hit nine home runs for Cleveland this season before he was dealt to Washington at the July 31 trade deadline. In the bottom half, Cabrera bolted from his spot at second base and made a running catch of Grandersons foul pop just before hitting a retaining wall and going head over heels. Frandsen handed New York its first run when he dropped dArnauds fourth-inning fly in front of the left-field warning track. "Its not being lazy or anything -- just dropped it. That stuff happens," Frandsen said. "Especially after screwing up and making a huge mistake, youve got to redeem yourself." TRAINERS ROOM Nationals: RF Jayson Werth sat out again and will remain sidelined for at least a couple of days after receiving a cortisone injection for his sore right shoulder. Williams said Werth has a sprained AC joint, but an MRI showed no structural damage. Mets: RHP Matt Harvey (elbow) threw 27 pitches during a bullpen session at the teams complex in Port St. Lucie, Florida. ... RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka (right elbow inflammation) is scheduled for another rehab outing Saturday with Double-A Binghamton. UP NEXT Looking for a three-game sweep, Washington sends Stephen Strasburg (8-10, 3.68 ERA) to the mound Thursday night against Dillon Gee (4-4, 3.54), who is 7-3 with a 3.23 ERA in 13 career starts against the Nationals. DIFFERENT STORY Michael Taylor, who homered in his major league debut Tuesday, went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts for the Nationals. Taylor started in centre field and batted leadoff, his regular spot in the lineup at Double-A this season. Center fielder Denard Span was rested before entering on defence in the eighth. BUSY MAN Mets star David Wright extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a first-inning single. But the crowd groaned as he tried to stretch it to a double and was thrown out easily by Frandsen, who also made a sliding grab on Wrights drive in the sixth.
