DETROIT -- JaCoby Jones began the season as a Double-A player serving a lengthy suspension. He heads into the final month as the Detroit Tigers choice to boost their inconsistent attack. The 24-year-old Jones had his contract purchased from Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday and was immediately inserted into the lineup at third base. He delivered in his first game, rapping out two hits and driving in two runs in an 8-4 victory over the Chicago White Sox.Hell likely make his second start in a Wednesday afternoon matinee against White Sox ace Chris Sale.I always had it in the back of my mind I was good enough to come up this year, Jones said. I didnt know, since I got suspended, Id get the chance this year. When I got the call last night everything came true. The Tigers acquired the versatile Jones from Pittsburgh during last seasons trade deadline in exchange for veteran reliever Joakim Soria.Jones was handed a 50-game suspension in November for a second violation of the Major League Baseball joint drug prevention and treatment program.Once he was eligible to return, Jones quickly advanced through Double-A Erie. He hit .312 in 20 games and was promoted to the Mud Hens. He got off to a slow start there but perked up in August, hitting .269 with 14 runs scored in 28 games.A natural shortstop, Jones mainly played centerfield in Triple A but also saw time at third base. The Tigers are hurting at both positions, with third baseman Nick Castellanos on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured hand and center fielder Cameron Maybin battling a thumb injury that kept him out of Tuesdays game.Well see if he can inject a little bit of life in the offense, manager Brad Ausmus said. Mac (Toledo manager Lloyd McClendon) said hes been swinging the bat a lot better lately. The Tigers havent needed a whole lot of offense with Justin Verlander on the mound. Verlander, who will make his 28th start of the season on Wednesday, has strung together nine consecutive quality starts. He ranks second in the American League with 189 strikeouts and is tied for fifth with 14 wins.Sale has lost five of his last six decisions spanning eight starts, though he has allowed three or fewer runs in six of those outings. One of those losses came against Detroit, when he gave up a late pinch-hit home run to J.D. Martinez in a 2-1 defeat on Aug. 3.Sale recorded a season-high 14 strikeouts in his last start against Seattle but the White Sox lost 3-1.He had a complete game in the last one, White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. Sometimes, the offense needs to pick up the pitching. Qs (Jose Quintana) been dealing with it for a few years, not getting a whole lot of support. Whether its hard luck, if thats what you want to call it, I dont know. But theyve been pitching well, I know that.Verlander will be making his 38th career start against the White Sox but theyve only faced him once this season. Verlander collected a win on June 5 while holding them to two runs in seven innings. We havent faced him in awhile but numbers-wise and when you watch him on film, his velocitys back up there and his command is a little better than its been, Ventura said. A guy who still has that kind of stuff is always going to be a quality pitcher, an elite pitcher. You better get your runs early when youre facing him because he gets better as he goes along. METAIRIE, La. -- Coach Sean Payton said he is not concerned about receiver Brandin Cooks apparent frustration with his role in the New Orleans Saints offense.Cooks wasnt targeted despite playing 45 snaps in the Saints 49-21 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. Cooks then made reference on Instagram to needing to become a businessman, and sources told ESPN that he has expressed growing frustration throughout this season -- mostly over being used as a clear-out receiver instead of a primary option.Listen, Cooks is a real good football player, and we work extremely hard on these game plans, Payton said Wednesday. Id say its a little unusual that we have a game where all of a sudden hes not targeted. But the first play of the game is supposed to be his play, and we dont get the right coverage look. Well keep working at finding those opportunities for him to get those touches.Listen, hes a great kid. Actually, not a kid -- hes a fantastic player and a good man, and we have a great relationship. Its hard when you do have a game with a lot of numbers like that and a guy like Brandin works his tail off and doesnt have a target or a touch, and sometimes that can happen. But I would say thats rare. Hes been explosive this season, hes certainly a primary target for us with what we do, and I think thats evident.Cooks was a first-round draft pick in 2014 and has been one of the Saints most dynamic offensive players over the past two seasons. He has 51 catches for 736 yards and six touchdowns this season, including two of the four longest catches in the NFL (98 and 87 yards, both for touchdowns). However, Cooks ranks third on the Saints in both targets and catches per game, behind rookie Michael Thomas and Willie Snead. In the Rams game in particular, the Saints featured a lot of quick, shorter throws to help neutralize the impact of pass-rushers Aaron Donald and Robert Quinn. And the offense thrived with a season-high 49 points and a total of 555 yards and five touchdown passes.I know hes frustrated with [his place in the offense], but I know hes a professional and he works hard, Snead said. I expect him to hhave a great game this week and bounce back.ddddddddddddThe Saints offense has long been known for spreading the ball around to a variety of receivers in the Payton-Drew Brees era. Tight end Jimmy Graham is the only pass-catcher who has made the Pro Bowl in that 11-year span.Weve had a lot of real good football players here. But I dont think weve ever been in a position where, Man, theyre doubling such-and-such, and its panic, Payton said. So guys are gonna get doubled. Or its not doubled so much, specifically, as you see a better corner travel [to match up against Cooks no matter where he lines up]. Sometimes Cooks is gonna draw some of those matchups, sometimes hes not. It depends on the team. But I think it was more of just the way the game unfolded [versus the Rams]. Like I said, the first play of the game was actually a down-the-field-shot play intended for Brandin. We got man-to-man coverage, different than what we were hoping to get. Things happen during the game, a progression takes you off a read high, and you end up underneath. It happens. I wouldnt have known [tight end] Josh Hill was gonna have [six] catches in that game, and yet thats the way it unfolded.Brees said he sees frustration bubble up in a teammate every week or two since hes been in New Orleans.Listen, theres not a guy who works harder in here than Brandin Cooks and expects more out of himself and wants to be a part of what were doing and our success, Brees said. That was just one of those games where there was opportunities called for him and the coverage kind of rolled his way or whatever it was and the ball ended up going elsewhere. And it was just one of those bad luck things for him personally, I guess. But obviously as a team we were rolling. And that just opens up opportunities for other people. And I think Brandin recognizes that, we talked about it after the game. And, listen, if we can go out and score 49 points and play like that and win every week, then I think everybody would be OK with it. ' ' '
