Following the implementation of the two-child policy in January, sperm banks across the country have announced shortages of sperm. Some are even taking creative steps to encourage more donations.
"Chinese people are deeply influenced by traditional culture and many people still regard sperm donation as something that rebels against orthodoxy," Fan Liqing, executive vice-president of the Reproductive and Genetic Hospital of Citi-Xiangya in Central China's Hunan Province, told the Global Times on Wednesday.
Experts from the hospital's sperm bank, which claims to be the country's largest Cheap Dmitry Kulikov Hat , expressed their concerns over the shortage of donated sperm and their worries that the quality of the sperm has declined year on year.
The only sperm bank in Southwest China's Sichuan Province tried to attract donors by raising their cash reward to 5,000 yuan ($748) and offering donors the chance to preserve their sperm for five years incase anything happens to their health.
Previously, the sperm bank offered donors 200 yuan for each donation.
Separately, an advertisement for the Shanghai Sperm Bank says that those who qualify to donate can receive up to 6,000 yuan ($898) for 17 milliliter of semen.
However, the shortage of qualified sperm donors remains a headache for China's sperm banks.
Facing a crisis
"For a long time Cheap Patrik Laine Hat , our sperm bank has been facing the problem that demand exceeds supply because there are few people who are willing to donate their sperm and among willing donors, there are only a few qualified ones," an expert from the Hunan sperm bank told the Global Times on Wednesday on condition of anonymity.
According to experts, their studies show that less than 20 percent of Chinese college students can accept the idea of donating sperm, and of those, less than half would be willing to donate sperm themselves.
"Unlike blood donation Cheap Blake Wheeler Hat , it is very difficult for a sperm bank to publicize sperm donation and publicly recruit donators as it might offend people's sensibilities," said Fan, adding that some parents or girlfriends even force potential donors not to donate.
Moreover, another problem is that the quality of sperm has gone down. The expert said that statistics showed that the ratio of qualified donors to applicants has reduced from 45.9 percent in 2006 to 17.9 percent in 2015, adding that this might be related to environment and lifestyle changes.
