SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The slumping Anaheim Ducks may have started to feel that any close call wouldnt go their way.On Saturday, one in their favor figured prominently in a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks.Trailing 2-1 midway through the second, the Ducks tied the game on a disputed play.Ryan Garbutt had a breakaway and appeared to be in the act of shooting when he was shoved from behind by Sharks defenseman Brent Burns. The puck trickled past the goal line as Garbutt collided with Jones, taking out the net.Garbutts second goal of the season was upheld after Sharks coach Peter DeBoers challenge. The NHL explained the decision on its website, saying the actions of San Joses Brent Burns caused Garbutt to contact Jones before the puck crossed the goal line.Weve had numerous things go against in that type of situation, but they obviously ruled that Garbutt was pushed by Burns and if you look at it, he did push him and the puck did enter the net, Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said.I dont know what our players supposed to do in that situation. The goal gave a Ducks team that was riding a three-game losing streak the emotional lift it desperately needed.Obviously it gave us some life, Carlyle said.DeBoer had a different take on Garbutts goal.I still think you have to make some intent to try to stop and avoid the collision, DeBoer said. I didnt see that, but they obviously saw something I didnt.Ryan Getzlaf and Rickard Rakell also scored for Anaheim, and Jonathan Bernier had 21 saves.Getlaf gave the Ducks the lead for good at 12:59 of the second. With Justin Braun in the box for elbowing Corey Perry, Getlaf beat Martin Jones for just his second goal of the season.Getzlafs goal came against one of the leagues best penalty killing units. The Sharks had killed off 42 of their previous 46 power plays heading into Saturdays game.We put a lot of pressure in their zone and in the neutral zone, Bernier said. They didnt have enough energy to come and have some rush because they had to change, they were stuck in their zone for a while and we kept doing the same thing over and over.Logan Couture and Dylan DeMelo scored for San Jose, which had won three in a row. Jones had 23 saves. But the Sharks couldnt get much going the rest of the way. They had just five shots on goal in the third period. We had some chances, Couture said. They shut it down pretty good. We didnt really sustain much pressure until the very end there. We had some shifts in their end. Would have liked to generate a couple more shots.Getzlafs goal came against one of the leagues best penalty-killing units. The Sharks had killed off 42 of their previous 46 power plays heading into Saturdays game.Couture scored the first goal on a power play 8:40 into the game.Felt like we were wrestling around in front of the net the whole night, both ways, Pavelski said. It was a hard fought game. Didnt necessarily feel like we were on the outside, it was pretty even.We wanted to get that one and we thought we had it coming, felt confident that we were going to tie it up but we ran out of time.Game notes San Jose F Tommy Wingels was sidelined by a lower-body injury, and DeBoer said he is day to day. As Rudy returns to the race where he made his name, a second Villiers Stakes win would also take Helen Page level with John Hawkes as the most successful current trainer in the race. While the legendary TJ Smiths benchmark of seven Villiers wins appears insurmountable, the Gold Coast-based Page can join Hawkes with three wins, the most of any active trainer.Rudy will arrive in Sydney in the early hours of Friday aiming to repeat his 2014 win in Saturdays Group Two race at Randwick over 1600m.Page also won the Villiers in 1989 with Spot The Rock when her stables were at Warwick Farm.Hes been very successful at a mile and hes won this race before, Page said.Ive targeted it this year.Rudy didnt contest last years Villiers after three unsuccessful starts during Melbourne spring carnival. But Page has re-focused on Sydneys summer showpiece, priming Rudy for the race with two hit-outs in Brisbane. He finished fifth in an open handicap over 1350m on the Sunshine Coast on November 16 and fourth in the Listed Recognition Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm on November 26, carrying big weights both times.Im pleased he didnt get any more weight by running places, Page said.Hes run a couple of nice races coming into it and hes doing very well.ddddddddddddRandwick was in the soft range on Thursday with up to 15mm of rain forecast for Sydney on Friday and showers expected on race day.The track was soft when Rudy scored a narrow win two years ago and he has an imposing record in heavy going with four wins and a second from six starts. He loves the wet but he likes it any way so hes a handy horse to have, Page said.Rudy is a $21 chance to win his second Villiers, the same price as Malice who would also put trainer John OShea on level terms with Hawkes.Fabrizio has been the dominant favourite since markets opened and is at $3.20 to win the race for trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott. The Ciaron Maher-trained Hazzabeel is at $8 after a narrow defeat in the Group Three Festival Stakes at Rosehill on December 3.There isnt just the carrot of an automatic entry into the Doncaster Mile up for grabs with Rudy likely to be one of the horses attempting to collect the $100,000 bonus for winning the Villiers and the Bernborough Handicap in Brisbane on New Years Eve.
