HOUSTON -- The last time Felix Hernandez had a 7-0 lead, everything fell apart for Seattles ace. This time around things were much different. Nick Franklin hit his first career grand slam in Seattles big second inning to back up a scoreless start by Hernandez, and the Mariners rolled past the Houston Astros 12-5 on Sunday for their season-best sixth straight victory. Franklins slam, Seattles fifth this season, came off Jordan Lyles (4-4) in a seven-run second. Hernandez (11-4) scattered four hits with seven strikeouts over six innings to lower his AL-leading ERA to 2.43. He is 6-0 in his last 10 starts and hasnt lost since May 25. The Mariners were up 7-0 in the third inning against the Angels on June 20 before Hernandez was tagged for a season-high seven runs over the next three innings as Los Angeles rallied for a 10-9 win. "Im sure it was in the back of everyones mind, but he was a different animal today," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. "Hes one of those guys, it might happen once, but its not going to happen again. I thought he did a good job against them. They made him work. But he did a good job and made pitches." Hernandez said he didnt think about that game against the Angels, he simply appreciated getting so much run support early. "Oh yeah, man, its fun to pitch like that," he said. "The last few weeks weve been scoring a lot of runs. Weve just got to continue to do that and were going to win a lot of games." Brad Miller, Dustin Ackley and Michael Saunders drove in two runs each to help the Mariners wrap up a three-game sweep. Lyles yielded eight hits and 10 runs, with a career-high nine earned, in four-plus innings to lose his third consecutive decision "It snowballed," Lyles said. "From the get-go, I was missing around the zone. I wasnt quite hitting targets. I was just a little bit off. It really came down to fastball command." The Mariners piled up 13 hits, a day after managing just one in a 4-2 win. Wedge liked that his team continued to pad the lead after going up by seven early. "A lot of times youll see that: You get a big lead and you dont do anything the rest of the game," Wedge said. "I thought our guys did a good job of staying hungry." Hernandez didnt allow a runner past first base until the fifth when Justin Maxwell reached on an error by Miller at shortstop and went to second on a wild pitch. Maxwell advanced to third on a one-out single by Jake Elmore, but Hernandez left Houston empty-handed when Jose Altuve grounded into a double play. Kendrys Morales singled to open the Seattle second and Kyle Seager reached on an error at shortstop by Elmore. Michael Saunders drew a one-out walk to load the bases before an infield single by Ackley made it 1-0. A second run came home when Lyles plunked Henry Blanco with a pitch. Millers RBI single pushed the lead to 3-0 before the grand slam by Franklin, off to an impressive start in his rookie season. "It was definitely a great bounce-back from yesterday and only having the one hit," Franklin said of jumping on Houston early. "But at the same time, weve been swinging it well and it was just one of those adjustment periods we had to go through and get back after it the next day." Lyles retired Raul Ibanez before finally escaping the inning when Morales came up again and grounded out. Lyles settled down after that and retired six of his next seven batters. Things started going awry again in the fifth when Ibanez led off with a double before an RBI single by Morales made it 8-0. Lyles hit Seager with a pitch and was chased by Justin Smoaks single. Saunders grounded into a force out to add another run and the Mariners went up 10-0 on a sacrifice fly by Ackley. Miller pushed the lead to 11-0 with an RBI single in the seventh, and Saunders extended his career-best hitting streak to 10 games with an RBI double in the eighth. The Astros got a run-scoring single from Altuve in the seventh and tacked on four runs in the ninth to make it 12-5. LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Jack Gibbs scored 28 points and Peyton Aldridge contributed 12 points and 11 rebounds to power Davidson past Arizona State 68-60 during the fifth-place game of the Tire Pros Invitational on Sunday. The Wildcats (3-1) were patient throughout and moved the ball around until they found the open man. Gibbs, who also had four assists and two steals, was often that man as he consistently got past the Sun Devil guards for uncontested layups. But Gibbs greatest contribution came at the free throw line where he converted 16 of 21 attempts, including two key free throws with 28.5 seconds remaining to stretch the lead back out to six points. The Sun Devils attempted just 13 free throws as a team.If we are playing one-on-one they might beat us but if we are playing five-on-five I think that was the team thing where we are trying to get better as a team, said Gibbs, whose team had 15 assists off 19 field goals for the game. We made some steps today. In addition to Gibbs and Aldridge, the Wildcats also got double-digit production from Will Magarity (10).Guard Tra Holder led ASU with 18 points before fouling out with 1:45 remaining and his team trailing 62-52. Shannon Evans II also finished with 13 points and seven assists for ASU (3-2).But the Sun Devils, who shot 29 percent from the field in the first half and 32 percent for the game, were hurt by the missed shots of key players like Torian Graham (1 for 12 from the field) and Obinna Oleka (5 for 16).I thought we played as poor of an offensive half as I think we will maybe play all season, said ASU coach Bobby Hurley, whose team pulled within four points late after trailing by as many as 18 in the second half. We are way more capable and better as an offensive team than we showed in the first half. We didnt make shots.Davidson, an Atlantic 10 school, went 2-1 against Power 5 opponents in this weeks tournament.dddddddddddd The Wildcats defeated both Missouri and Arizona State convincingly after losing to Clemson in the opening round. Two very good wins against two very well-coached and very talented teams, said Davidson coach Bob McKillop. To be able to head back to Davidson with two wins against Power 5 teams under our belts is a great statement about us.BIG PICTUREDavidson: The Wildcats proved themselves as a quality team that can play with the big schools. McKillops team beats opponents by being patient, making the extra pass to find the open man. It worked well in wins over Missouri and Arizona State in this tournament. Davidson, however, must take better care of the ball. The Wildcats committed 18 turnovers against ASU.Arizona St: This tournament has to be considered a letdown for the Sun Devils, who suffered double-digit losses to non-Power 5 opponents Northern Iowa and Davidson. Their lone victory in the tournament came against Tulane in a loser bracket game. Holder is the Sun Devils leader but he has to play under control and take better shots.NO CHARITYThere was a huge disparity in free throws for the game with Davidson going 23-30 at from the line, while the Sun Devils had just 13 free throw opportunities and converted seven. The free throw line killed us today, Hurley said. Our inability to get to the free throw line and their ability to get to the line was surprising considering they are a 3-point shooting team.SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHTGibbs, who was on fire for much of the tournament, tied a Tire Pros Invitational record with 71 points over the three days.UP NEXTDavidson: The
