WASHINGTON -- Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump says opponent Hillary Clinton and other Democrats are trying to rig the fall debates by scheduling two of the events opposite NFL games. The football league has complained to him about the debate schedule in a letter, the billionaire says. The NFL and the Commission on Presidential Debates on Saturday rejected both of Trumps assertions.A spokesman for the NFL said the football league didnt send such a letter to Trump. The independent, nonpartisan commission said that no political party or campaign was consulted when the dates were selected last year.Late Friday night, Trump posted a tweet: As usual, Hillary & the Dems are trying to rig the debates so 2 are up against major NFL games. Same as last time w/ Bernie. Unacceptable! In an interview with ABCs This Week for its program Sunday, Trump was asked if he would accept the commissions debate schedule. He replied: Well, Ill tell you what I dont like. Its against two NFL games. I got a letter from the NFL saying, `This is ridiculous. Why are the debates against -- `cause the NFL doesnt wanna go against the debates. `Cause the debates are gonna be pretty massive, from what I understand, OK?Asked about Trumps assertion, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy tweeted on Saturday: While wed obviously wish the Debate Commission could find another night, we did not send a letter to Mr Trump.Following the NFLs denial that a letter had been sent to Trump, a Trump aide said the Republican candidate was made aware of the conflicting dates by a source close to the league. The aide was not authorized to speak by name and requested anonymity. Two of the three debates scheduled in September and October will be televised during NFL games. On Sept. 26, the night of the first debate, ESPN will carry the Monday night game featuring the Falcons vs. the Saints. On Oct. 9, the second debate will air opposite the Sunday night game featuring the Giants vs. the Packers on NBC.I dont know how the dates were picked. I dont know why those particular dates, Trump told ABC.The Democratic Party was criticized during the primary race for scheduling debates between Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders on Saturday nights and holiday weekends, times when viewership is low. The Sanders campaign suggested that was an effort to limit the size of the audience.Trump told ABC: You know, Hillary Clinton wants to be against the NFL. She doesnt -- maybe like she did with Bernie Sanders, where they were on Saturday nights when nobodys home. The presidential debate commission serves as the event sponsor and sets the participation criteria, dates, sites and formats. The sites and dates for the 2016 debates were announced in September 2015.The CPD did not consult with any political parties or campaigns in making these decisions, the commission said in a statement issued Saturday. The Clinton campaign did not immediately comment on Trumps assertions. In the ABC interview, Trump did allow that three debates were fine and that hed rather have three than one.---AP Pro Football Writer Barry Wilner in Springfield, New Jersey, and AP writers Jonathan Lemire in New York and Lisa Lerer in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, contributed to this report.---This story has been corrected to show that Trumps tweet was posted Friday night, not Saturday. Where there is smoke, there is or perhaps has been a little fire. Or, in other words, the two teams would appear to have at least spoken. And spoken is defined as one calling the other to inquire, no more, no less. ST. LOUIS -- Slugger Yoenis Cespedes turned out to be a nifty slider, too.Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright lost his glove trying to tag out Cespedes in a bizarre play, and the New York Mets broke away soon after that to beat St. Louis 10-6 Thursday night.Alejandro De Aza homered and drove in five runs, helping Seth Lugo earn his first major league win. The Mets led 3-0 in the fifth when Wainwright (9-8) and Cespedes were involved in a strange sequence.Cespedes tried to go from first to third on a bloop single by James Loney. When several Cardinals chased the ball, Wainwright covered third base. Cespedes slid and his cleat pinned Wainwrights glove to the bag -- he wouldve been out, but when Wainwright pulled away his hand, the mitt stayed stuck under Cespedes foot.Because Wainwright didnt control the ball, Cespedes was called safe in a ruling upheld by replay. Moments later, De Aza hit a three-run homer to make it 7-0.He said that when I pulled out the glove, I had to show possession, Wainwright said. I dont know what else I could have done there. There was another runner on base. Ive never seen it before, never heard of it before.De Azas fifth home run of the season came an inning after his two-run single. The five RBI set a career high.Every time you hit a home run its fun, De Aza said. Especially when you can contribute to help the team win. Its a great feeling.De Aza also made a jumping catch against the center field wall to rob Matt Carpenter of an extra-base hit in the first inning. He knows his role, Mets manager Terry Collins said. He doesnt have to like it, but he accepts it and he gets himself ready. He didnt stop working. He didnt stop all the practice. All he needed was a chance to get to play with it and when he got it hes made the most out of it, he said.Lugo (1-2) pitched five scoreless innings. The Mets took two of three to win their first series at Busch Stadium since 2008.This was a tough series, Collins said. Theyve got a good team and we came into this series knowing we had to pick up some ground and we picked up a game and that means a lot.ddddddddddddBrandon Moss hit two home runs for the Cardinals and Jedd Gyorko and Stephen Piscotty also connected.Lugo gave up two hits and struck out five to earn his first win since May 10 at Triple-A Las Vegas. On Tuesday night, Mets reliever Robert Gsellman also posted his first big league win.Together, Lugo and Gsellman helped the Mets win a road series from the first time since July 22-24 in Miami.Lugo left the game with right calf cramp while warming up before the sixth. By then, hed also gotten his first hit in the majors. The biggest thing for me is keeping from getting behind in the counts and having to throw pitches over the middle of the plate, Lugo said. It helps me expand the zone.James Loney got three hits and scored twice for the Mets. Loney is hitting .529 (18 for 34) against Wainwright for his career.Wainwright struggled for the third time in his last four starts, giving up seven runs -- only two earned -- and nine hits in five innings. Its another game that we lose in which I start and the offense scores some runs, Wainwright said. I dont know what else to say other than Ive got to keep going.TRAINERS ROOMMets: OF Jay Bruce (calf) was out of the lineup after leaving Wednesday nights game with cramps. ...
