NEW YORK -- ?Energy up there, come on! Andy Murray barked at his box.He wasnt going to get it from Ivan Lendl. The Czech turned, stony-faced, to mutter something along those lines to Jamie Delgado, whose face cracked into a broad grin.Until Saturday afternoon at Flushing Meadows, the world No. 2 had so far glided with ease through the US Open and it was deemed a foregone conclusion he would reach the last 16.But Murray received a rude awakening in his third-round match against Paolo Lorenzi that went 3 hours, 17 minutes, which the Scot eventually won 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 on Arthur Ashe Stadium. It took me a little bit longer than I would have liked to sort of work things out, Murray later told a news conference. But I worked it out, won, got through, and I didnt play good. So Im happy with that.Lorenzi, the 34-year-old Italian with 18 challenger titles to his name, came into the tournament having won only two Grand Slam matches. This was the first time he had made the third round of a major in 22 attempts. His second-round match had gone five sets and nearly five hours against Gilles Simon, but here he was still scampering after every ball, huffing and puffing. In the form of his life, he was rising to the occasion of his life.Lorenzi served for both the first and second sets, eventually winning the second after 1 hour and 55 minutes. Wake up! Murray had screamed at himself. The Scot sent Delgado scampering off to have his rackets restrung after the first set, having committed 27 unforced errors; he made 63 overall.I just went up in tension a little bit, Murray told ESPN analyst Brad Gilbert on court. It was quite different today, having played under the roof in my last match. There was a difference. I strung a few a little higher in tension, it helped me control the ball a little better.Murray hadnt had to look to his camp like this for guidance for a while -- before this encounter he was 24-1, and had reached seven straight finals, winning his third major title at Wimbledon and his second straight Olympic gold medal. But he would have known Lorenzi, up to this point almost like a moving wall, would not be able to keep up this level of play. Murray had a productive couple of minutes as Lorenzi went for a comfort break after the second set -- he put a new grip on his racket and took a grip on this match. From there Murray began from zero. He hit 17 winners and lost just one point on his first serve in the third set.Lorenzi had run himself into the ground. Finally, at love-15 and 3-1 down in the fourth set, he decided for the first time not to try to chase down a ball.Hes ranked 40 in the world. Hes pretty good. So I expected a tough match, Murray said in his news conference. I expected long rallies. Im just disappointed with the amount of errors I made. I was quite impatient at times. That cost me in the first and second sets. When I did play like I was planning on when I went out there, to be more patient, wait for the right balls to go for, you know, played much, much better, dictated more of the points. I wasnt going for too much. The unforced errors came down significantly and the winners went up. The third and fourth sets were comfortable. Obviously the first two were extremely, extremely tough.Next up is Grigor Dimitrov, who got the better of Murray in Miami earlier this year. That match appeared to be the beginning of the end of Murrays partnership with former coach Amelie Mauresmo -- the Frenchwoman sat away from the rest of Murrays camp, amid talk of a rift.Dimitrov also ended Murrays first Wimbledon defense in the quarterfinals at the All England Club in 2014, again when the Scot was under the guidance of Mauresmo. The Bulgarian has made quiet progress under Murrays former assistant coach, Dani Vallverdu, and the British No. 1 knows he will have to improve upon his third-round display.Hes a very good player, said Murray. He does a lot of things well on the court. He has good feel, moves well. Hes obviously not played his best the last 18 months or so, but definitely the last few weeks has been playing very well, getting back to a level that hes capable of playing at.It will be another tough one in a couple of days time. I expect it to be very hard. Ill be ready for that. Ill need to play better than today if I want to win that. Amy Rodriguez Jersey . Isner, ranked No. 14, won his eighth career singles title and took the title in New Zealand for the second time after his victory in 2010. The match was similar to Isners quarterfinal victory over fifth-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber which went to three sets, all tiebreaks and contained no breaks of serve. Sydney Leroux Jersey . The superstars come out to play when the First Direct Arena in Leeds hosts the opening night of tungsten action this Thursday night, live on Sky Sports.Defending champion Gary Anderson, world No 1 Michael van Gerwen and six-time winner Phil Taylor head a star-studded 10-man field which heads to 16 venues with over 100,000 fans expected to turn out. Its the biggest tournament ever and the four-time World Championship semi-finalist and former Premier League star Mardle takes us through his overall predictions for the season. The dark horse Dave Chizzy Chisnall will not be far off from repeating his performance last season where he so nearly won the league. I think now hes got this game where he used to be so hit and miss. If he was slightly off he would lose. Hes not like that anymore because hes found this consistent way of playing - he doesnt snatch like he used to - he just seems in control of himself and his darts and I think he will be the outsider to make the play-offs again. When [Raymond] Van Barneveld won it in 2014, he made the semi-final by just scrapping in and he hadnt beaten Phil [Taylor] in 21 attempts on TV. He beat Phil and then he beat Michael [Van Gerwen] in the final so any outcome is possible of that there is no doubt. (Chisnall 9/4 to make the play-offs at Sky Bet)Early exits For me its going to be Robert Thornton and Michael Smith. They are the two favourites to be eliminated or not make the cut, relegated, whatever you want to call it.Thornton is not playing well - hes played pretty poorly and at the Worlds he didnt look great. Theres a lot of things that are happening when Robert plays. He was the highest seed that went out at the Worlds and was 8-0 up at the Masters before going on to lose against Dave Chisnall - these things do not happen when youre not playing well. He wont be high on confidence. As for Michael Smith, the Premier League is difficult - I know that and all the players that play in it will tell you about that.A good start for him is paramount. I think he has to win the first two games. You dont have to win every week, but I just think he has to win in one of the first two weeks otherwise he could be on a bit of a downer with confidence. He doesnt seem the type to pick himself up to me.Power cut I dont think Phil Taylor will dominate.dddddddddddd If he wins it, I think it will be the hard way. Nothing comes easy to Phil at the moment. Even when hes making or what seems to be making light work of an opponent he will miss and give them an opportunity, which is something he never used to do.Its just the mindset because when youre used to beating someone [like Phil Taylor] and then it turns the other way, its difficult. The mind plays tricks on you and you think youre not going to win even though you think youve got that chance, that opportunity. (Taylor 5/4 not to reach the play-offs with Sky Bet)Top guns I think Michael Van Gerwen and Gary Anderson will end up first and second in the Premier League table and I think Michael will finish top. Hes won it the last three years so I cant see no reason why he wont win it again - he is the best player on the planet - and he proves that consistently, even when he loses. At the World Championship he averaged 105 - the mans an absolute machine at the moment.Hes got that Phil Taylor mindset where he wants to win, win, win. Michael has never actually said that he is looking for perfection. As long as hes happy with his performance, hes OK. Whereas Phils always been 118 average, I can do better. Michael is 118 average, that was brilliant - yeah, I want to do that again. And the winner is... No great shakes - Michael Van Gerwen. Like I said, come the play-off, any one of the four who are in it can most certainly win the trophy. Van Gerwen, Anderson and Taylor have won it before. Barney has won it before. I think whoever qualifies will fancy it, I really do.Michael Van Gerwen, from day-to-day, he is just becoming an absolute certainty. He is winning games - he gets in early and rips them to shreds and makes the players doubt themselves. When he is behind he can fight back and he gets away with it like Phil Taylor used to. People panic when they have a chance to beat him and I just think he will take all the stopping. He will win the league phase and I think he will win it overall.
