Phil Thompson believes Chelsea have given themselves a chance of getting past PSG in the Champions League last-16 second leg, despite the 2-1 defeat in Paris. Edinson Cavanis 78th-minute winner came after Jon Obi Mikel had cancelled out Zlatan Ibrahimovics deflected opener in the French capital on Tuesday night, but a 1-0 win in the return leg at Stamford Bridge in three weeks would be enough for Chelsea.Thompson told Sky Sports News HQ that although Guus Hiddinks side will be upset at the late defeat, they have a chance of progressing to the last eight. Report: PSG 2-1 Chelsea Paris Saint-Germain will take a narrow lead to Stamford Bridge after beating Chelsea 2-1 Coming into the game, they would have said: Lets give ourselves a chance going into the game at Stamford Bridge, said Thompson. With a 2-1 defeat, yes, theyll be upset that theyve lost the game - but theyve got an away goal. Chelsea players stand dejected after Edinson Cavanis late winner Theyve given themselves a good chance, and they did cause the PSG defence plenty of problems. It was a shaky start, but you know youre going to get this in this sort of game. They did have a few chances, but they will know - its still a tough game, but theyve given themselves a chance.Thompson praised the performance of centre-halves Gary Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic, who put in a fine show to limit PSG to two goals at the Parc des Princes. Cavani slots the ball past Thibaut Courtois at an acute angle for PSG But the Sky Sports pundit was concerned with the fitness of Eden Hazard, who was starting for only the third time in Chelseas last six games.Ivanovic and Cahill were absolutely terrific, added Thompson. Ibrahimovic was alright, he caused them a lot of problems with his movement at first, but he dropped deeper and deeper, because that was the influence of Ivanovic and Cahill. Hazard didnt look completely fit, I dont know what hes doing in training. But he played very well, he looked up and had good control, and maybe his fitness is the reason they brought him off after 70 minutes, to get Oscar on and give them some fresh legs. Phil Thompson praised the performance of Gary Cahill in Paris That said, he was nothing like the Eden Hazard of last year.Put on the spot for a prediction as to who will progress, Thompson conceded PSG may be too strong for Chelsea in the second leg, and that he can see them scoring at least one away goal at Stamford Bridge.[Will Chelsea go through?] No, because I think PSG have got a goal, or maybe two, in them. I think its going to be a difficult one, I really do.Do Chelsea have a chance of reaching the Champions League quarter-finals? Let us know by commenting below... It is a cliché dragged out by fans and pundits regularly when discussions take place around which teams are better than others. CLEVELAND -- Indians catcher Yan Gomes may play in October, after all.Gomes, who broke his right hand during a minor league injury rehabilitation appearance late in the season, has progressed to the point that Cleveland may include him in its postseason roster when the Indians open the AL Division Series on Thursday against Boston.Hes remarkable, Indians manager Terry Francona said Tuesday before a workout at Progressive Field. Its been a challenging season for Gomes, who separated his right shoulder on July 17 and spent two months on the disabled list. During his final game with Double-A Akron before his expected return, he was struck by a pitch and it appeared his season was over. However, Gomes worked himself back into the lineup last week. He homered on Sunday in Kansas City, connecting on the first pitch he had seen in a major league game in 77 days.Francona did not reveal his roster, but Gomes wore shin pads during infield drills and took batting practice. Francona praised Indians trainers Lonnie Soloff and Jim Mehalik for helping Gomes during his recovery.I dont think Yan thought there was a chance this was possible, Francona said. I know Lonnie kind of put it in his head. I think it took Yan maybe a night to kind of grasp that there was a chance. And then once he did, he was all in, like you can see. When Gomes homered, the Indians dugout erupted in celebration. As he watched on television, Indians president Chris Antonetti was moved as well.It gave me chills, Antonetti said. To know how hard hes worked and all hes been through throughout the course of the season, for him to hit a home run -- not only ffor himself, but the impact it had on the team -- you just couldnt write a better script.ddddddddddddI was just so happy for him more than anything. The Indians, who overcame injuries while winning their first AL Central title since 2007, also have been encouraged by the improvement theyve seen in injured starter Danny Salazar, who has been sidelined with a strained forearm. The right-hander wont pitch against Boston, but Salazar might be back on the mound if the Indians advance. He has been increasing his velocity and pitch count during recent bullpen sessions with the hope that he might be able to pitch in relief during the offseason. In the meantime, the team is sending him to their training facility in Goodyear, Arizona, where he can get more attention and treatment.Hell continue on a throwing program, try to build up his arm strength, feel completely healthy and well see where it goes from there, Antonetti said. The first goal is just to make sure hes full healthy and at full strength. From there, well determine what the best role might be. But, I would imagine it would be in shorter stints. Its not going to be in a starting spot.Danny obviously wants to pitch. They work throughout the course of the year and in spring training just to get to this point and have the opportunity to pitch or play in the postseason. Dannys just not to that point. I think if he could pitch, he would. The 26-year-old went 11-6 with a 3.87 in 25 starts before leaving a Sept. 9 outing after four innings. ' ' '
