AUSTIN, Texas -- This week, Texas will launch what state officials say is the nations largest effort to track brain injuries among young athletes. The University Interscholastic League, Texas governing body for public high school sports, is partnering with the ODonnell Brain Institute at UT Southwestern Medical Center for the project, from which they hope to gauge whether rules or equipment changes are improving player safety and what more can be done to protect athletes.A state as large as Texas, which has more than 800,000 public high school athletes, would be a key step in developing a national database of brain injuries in youths, officials say. Already, the federal Centers of Disease Control and Prevention is seeking federal funding for such a database.Until we understand what the frequency of concussions is across the state, or a region of the state, we cant determine when rule changes, equipment changes or things like recovery programs are really being effective, said Dr. Munro Cullum, a professor of psychiatry, neurology and neurotherapeutics who will lead the study. All 50 states in recent years have passed rules or laws to address concussions in youth athletics from research to protocols for identifying concussions and setting rules for return to play. The CDC has estimated that up to 3.8 million concussions occur in sports and recreational activities each year, but some experts wonder if those numbers underestimate total brain injuries, as some individuals may not seek treatment for mild or moderate symptoms. The Texas program will track about two-dozen sports, from football to girls soccer, recording what caused an injury, recovery time and other data.Other states have researched head injuries, too.In Michigan, which requires schools to report concussions, a recent concussion study showed 755 schools reported 4,452 head injuries in the 2015-2016 school year. Football had the most- 1,907 -- and girls basketball ranked No. 2 with 454.It tracked details such as whether the injury occurred in practice or a game, whether the athlete had to miss class and how long it took them to return to competition. That research is being shared with Michigan State Universitys Institute for the Study of Youth Sports. The Texas study will collect more concussion data than it has before, University Interscholastic League deputy director Jamey Harrison said. Currently, Texas requires only one school from each district report concussions as part of a weekly injury reporting system, though each school in the football playoffs is required to report concussions.Right now its a sample that is just a snapshot. Its not scientific, Harrison said. We need to move beyond that. Christian Okoye Chiefs Jersey . -- Al Jefferson found a groove just in time for the Charlotte Bobcats. Anthony Sherman Jersey . Midfielder Andrea Poli put the Azzurri ahead in the 28th minute at the DallAra stadium, Alberto Gilardino doubled the lead in the 33rd, Andrea Pirlo made it 3-0 with one of his expert free kicks in the 50th and Alberto Aquilani added another in the 79th. Among usual Italy starters, only goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and Pirlo began the match, and Buffon was replaced by Salvatore Sirigu for the final 20 minutes. "I wanted to see some things, and I did. These guys want to show their worth," Italy coach Cesare Prandelli said. "Were doing well from a physical standpoint." Mario Balotelli came on for Italy in the 49th and hit the woodwork twice. San Marino, which has won just one match since gaining UEFA membership in 1988, never really threatened. The oldest republic in the world, which is nestled atop a hill in central Italy, is ranked last in the FIFA rankings, tied for No. 207 with Bhutan and the Turks and Caicos Islands. Next Friday, Italy visits the Czech Republic for a key World Cup qualifier. The Azzurri then travel to Brazil for the June 15-30 Confederations Cup. In a nod to the local fans, Prandelli started with Bologna forwards Alessandro Diamanti and Gilardino in attack. Atalantas Giacomo Bonaventura rounded out the forward line in a 4-3-3. San Marino goalkeeper Aldo Simoncini did well to keep the sheet clean at the start and Italy had two goals ruled out for offside before Poli finally bbroke the deadlock by scoring his first goal for the national team with an angled shot through Simoncinis legs.dddddddddddd Gilardino then scored his 18th goal for Italy in the 33rd by redirecting a rebound of a shot from Aquilani. Italy fullback Luca Antonelli exited toward the end of the half with a physical problem and Prandelli began a series of substitutions shortly after the second half started. However, it was Pirlo who got the next goal by curling a free kick over the San Marino wall for his 12th goal with the Azzurri. Aquilani, who is vying to make Italys 23-man squad for the Confederations Cup, had a good match and scored by knocking in a rebound off a free kick from Pirlo. Balotelli hit the post with a free kick in the 64th, was denied with a diving effort from San Marinos reserve goalkeeper Federico Valentini in the 81st, and hit the crossbar with a header in the 90th. "I liked his approach," Prandelli said. "He came on attempting to score. Thats what he always needs to do." With Italys Serie A afflicted by several cases of racist chanting from fans this season, there were anti-racism initiatives surround the match. Before kickoff, Italy captain Buffon and San Marino captain Andy Selva each read an appeal to fans over the stadiums public address system. Integration Minister Cecile Kyenge, Italys first black Cabinet minister, attended the game and sat next to Italian football federation president Giancarlo Abete. Before kickoff, she met with Prandelli, Buffon, and Balotelli. ' ' '
