VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- The Vancouver Canucks know plenty about the goaltender that they will face Sunday night -- but not much else about the Carolina Hurricanes.Eddie Lack, who spent five seasons with the Canucks organization, will start in goal for the Hurricanes (0-1-0) as they visit the Canucks (1-0-0) at Rogers Arena. But the Western Conference-based Canucks seldom battle the Eastern Conference-based Hurricanes due to the NHLs imbalanced schedule. So Canucks winger Jannik Hansen needed only one word to describe what he knows about the Canes.Nothing, said Hansen on Saturday night. Maybe if Eddie Lack is in net, I know a little bit about them.He and the Canucks will soon discover that the Hurricanes are a young, fast offensively talented team considered to be on the rise -- and, sometimes, they have decent goaltending. Lack will make his first start of the season as the Hurricanes try to make amends for a season-opening loss to the Jets in Winnipeg on Thursday.Cam Ward will back him up after playing in Winnipeg.Im very, very excited, Lack told The Vancouver Province after the Hurricanes skated in Vancouver on Saturday. Just being back and seeing old friends, and getting the season going for me.As a team, the Hurricanes are not feeling that good about their season opener. Carolina squandered a 4-1 third-period lead before bowing 5-4 in overtime to the Jets.Lack will be looked upon to help his team tighten up defensively. That might not be difficult against the low-scoring Canucks, who won their season opener Saturday by edging the Calgary Flames 2-1 on former Hurricane Brandon Sutters winning goal in overtime.Although the Hurricanes have had a couple days of rest in Vancouver, the Canucks will be playing their second of back-to-back home games as they attempt to get off to a strong start at home. Its a quick turnaround, Hansen said. Lets get these back-to-backs out of the way early in the season when you are still feeling fresh and clear in the head.Hansen will try to beat the loquacious Lack on the ice after trading barbs with him in the dressing room during the goaltenders two full seasons with the Canucks before he was traded to Carolina prior to the 2015-16 season.Lack, who also spent three seasons with Vancouvers farm teams while getting occasional call-ups, will also try to get the upper hand on old friend and fellow Swede Jakob Markstrom, who will make his first start in goal this season for the Canucks. After being acquired from Florida in 2013-14 as part of the Roberto Luongo trade, Markstrom toiled mainly in the minors while he and Lack were in the Canucks organization together. But even after Lack played reasonably well in 41 stars in 2014-15, Vancouver general manager Jim Benning decided to send him to the Hurricanes in the offseason.Lack will make his second appearance against the Canucks since he was sent packing in exchange for a pair of 2015 and 2016 draft picks. A strong showing against the Canucks could launch his bid for more consistency this season.Lack went 1-4-1, with a 3.28 goals against average and a .874 save percentage, in his first seven appearances with Carolina in 2015-16. He rebounded to finish with a 12-14-6 record. But the numbers paled in comparison to the 34-30-9 mark, 2.43 goals against average and .917 save percentage that he posted in two seasons as a full-fledged member of the Canucks. The start I had last year was horrendous, he told The Vancouver Province. I feel like Ive done a good job this summer, putting everything behind me. I feel like Im ready to go.Lack prepared for the start by digesting some tacos Saturday afternoon. He became known for his love of the traditional Mexican dish during his days in Vancouver. So he had tacos waiting for his teammates after they finished their practice. They asked if I could order something, Lack told The Vancouver Province. Obviously, I had to order that -- right? If Canucks defenseman Ben Hutton has his way, the Canucks will dish out a strong effort against the Hurricanes. We know they are a good team, Hutton told reporters. Theyve got some good players and they are fast. We are going to have to come prepared.Hutton, a second-year rearguard who joined the Canucks after Lack left, is also known for his easy going nature. But he was stressing the need for self-discipline.Back-to-back, we have to come out of the gate strong, he said. Its a lot about us, not really them. We have to control us and stick to our systems and stay within our structure and it should be fine.Accordingly, he was not willing to allow his teammates to let the possibility of fatigue from two games in as many nights enter their heads. Its going to be tough, but its also good, said Hutton. You get right into it. There should be no excuses for being tired.Kerry Wood Jersey . They were putting most of their energy into a record-setting offensive display. Rio residents, known as Cariocas, were not about to let sporadic rains and strong wind gusts get in the way of a final hurrah. These were marvelous Olympic Games in the marvelous city, said International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach, playing off the cidade maravilhosa nickname of Brazils postcard city of inviting coastlines, year-round sun and lush tropical vegetation. While the stadium erupted in applause at that designation, a few minutes later there were boos of sadness when he announced: I declare the Games of the XXXI Olympiad closed. The closing ceremony in iconic Maracana Stadium was also meant to take care of some business -- formally signaling the transition to the 2020 Summer Olympics in Japan. But Sundays party was all about Brazil, designed to be more low-key than the opening ceremony, which focused heavily on Rio.The ceremony featured original footage of Alberto Santos-Dumont, the man Brazilians recognize as the inventor of the airplane. The theme Brazilians can do with their bare hands was a nod to the emerging economy of the worlds fifth-most populous nation.Dressed in colorful feathers, dozens of dancers formed in the shape of the arches of Lapa, a popular area of Rio akin to Roman ruins, then morphed to make the shape of iconic Sugarloaf before quickly changing again, this time to the official 2016 symbol.Samba legend Martinho da Vila, whose tunes make their way into many popular telenovelas, sang Carinhoso, or Affectionate. The athletes poured in under light rain, waving their flags while many shook their bodies to samba-infused pop that made the stadium feel like a Carnival parade. Britains athletes wore shoes with soles that lit up in changing colors of red, white and blue, while Tongan taekwondo athlete Pita Taufatofua danced onstage in a grass skirt as a DJ performed, reprising a moment that captured attention when he carried the flag for his country during the opening ceremony. The show widened its lens to Greater Brazil, a massive country with a land mass slightly larger than the continental United States. There was a tribute to cave paintings of some of the first inhabitants of the Americas, in Serra da Capivara, in northeastern Brazil, today the nations poorest region.Spectators got to see performers shake to frevo, a frenetic dance that -- if its even possible -- makes high-octane samba seem like a staid ballroom affair. Holding small umbrellas, dancers jumped and marched while performing acrobatics. They performed to Vassourinhas, which means small brooms, a popular song that was also the name of a famous club in the northeastern city of Recife. The show also built performances around saudade, which means anything from longing for someone to sadness to remembering good times. It is one of the most important words in Brazilian Portuguuese.ddddddddddddLights flashed translations for the word in many languages, and a group of women sang Mulher Rendeira, or Lace-making Woman, a nod to the countrys African heritage. Brazil was the last country in the Americas to outlaw slavery, in 1888.The Games had many memorable moments, both for Brazilian competitors at home and athletes from around the world.Soccer-crazed Brazil got partial payback against Germany, winning gold two years after a 7-1 World Cup semifinal shellacking that left many in Latin Americas largest nation fuming. American gymnast Simone Biles asserted her dominance with four golds, swimmer Michael Phelps added five more to up his staggering total to 23, and the worlds fastest man, Usain Bolt, put on his usual show with three golds just days before his 30th birthday. But there were also ugly episodes, such as American swimmer Ryan Lochtes fabricated story about a harrowing robbery that was actually an intoxication-fueled vandalism of a gas station bathroom, and bizarre issues like Olympic diving pools going from crystal blue to gunky, algae green -- at a time when Rios water quality in open waters is one of the biggest local environmental issues. There is widespread expectation that the Games in Tokyo, one of the worlds richest, most recognizable and cosmopolitan cities, will run more smoothly than they have in Rio. But theres also worry in Japan over whether the Olympics will further drag down an economy that has been struggling for decades.Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike accepted the flag from the IOCs Bach and Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes, signaling the transition.Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abes brief but showstopping gig in the closing ceremony as the Nintendo character Mario offered a tantalizing glimpse at Tokyos plans. The organizers for the Tokyo Games crammed the works into a brief two-minute film montage before Abes appearance. Athletes perform more than a dozen sports as landmarks like Tokyo Tower, cherry blossoms, a bullet train, Tokyo Bay Bridge and the famous scramble intersection in Shibuya whiz by.Anime and video game icons like Pac-Man and Hello Kitty were featured, along with the beloved blue Doraemon cat, who pulled from his pocket of magic gadgets a green warp pipe to whisk Abe from his limousine in Tokyo straight to Rio.Abe emerged from his Mario outfit in his usual get-up of a smartly tailored suit and tie. Many people will analyze how things went for the Rio Games in the months ahead. But on Sunday, one strong sentiment was relief -- that despite some problems, overall the Games went well. That wasnt a given going in. The Zika virus scared away some competitors and tourists, rampant street crime in Rio and recent extremist attacks around the world raised fears about safety, and Brazils political crisis, and the economic angst behind it, threatened to cast a pall over the competitions. We are very resilient. We didnt leave anything important unaddressed, said Augusta Porto, 36, a translator and Rio resident. We can welcome people despite the serious problems that we have faced in the recent past. ' ' '
