Carlos Beltran is headed back to Houston, hoping his 20th season in the majors could bring him -- and the Astros -- a most elusive World Series championship.A person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Saturday that the free agent slugger and the Astros have reached a one-year deal for $16 million. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because there was no official announcement. ESPN first reported the agreement.Beltran joins a rich, revamped lineup, with Houston recently adding catcher Brian McCann and outfielder Josh Reddick to a talented, young nucleus.Beltran, who turns 40 in April, hit a combined .295 with 29 home runs and 93 RBI last season. The switch-hitter was traded from the New York Yankees to the Texas Rangers on Aug. 1 and split his time as a designated hitter and right fielder, playing 151 games.A nine-time All-Star, Beltran has often excelled in October. His rise to postseason prominence began in his first playoff game, for Houston in 2004.Acquired from Kansas City that summer, Beltran went on to hit a postseason record-tying eight homers in only 12 games while batting .435 with 14 RBI, along with six steals. The Astros lost in the NL Championship Series to St. Louis that fall. In 2005, Beltran joined the New York Mets, while the Astros wound up getting swept by the White Sox in their only World Series appearance.Beltran made his lone World Series appearance in 2013 with St. Louis, which lost to Boston in six games. Overall, he has hit .323 with 16 homers and 41 RBI in 55 postseason games.Beltran is a career .281 hitter with 421 home runs and 1,536 RBI in 19 seasons with the Royals, Astros, Mets, Giants, Cardinals, Yankees and Rangers. Hes gone to the playoffs with five different teams.Led by middle infielders Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa and ace Dallas Keuchel, the Astros ended a decade-long playoff drought -- and reversed a four-year span in which they averaged well over 100 losses -- by winning the AL wild card in 2015. Expected to be a championship contender this year, Houston instead went 84-78 and missed the playoffs. The Astros have been busy since then, signing Reddick to a $52 million, four-year deal after he finished the season with the Dodgers and getting McCann in a trade with the Yankees. The Astros got $11 million from the Yankees to help cover the $34 million total hes set to make in the next two seasons.Along with his production on the field, Beltran has long been praised for his clubhouse influence and leadership, especially among young teammates. Beltran also runs an academy back home in Puerto Rico, where students focus on academics as well as athletics.Nike Air Vapormax Damen Idealo .com) - Manchester City midfielder David Silva is expected to miss the next four weeks because of a calf problem. In between is a seemingly harmless visit from a team from the Championship Subdivision.Except that the FCS team coming in for Saturdays game -- The Citadel -- is one of only two undefeated teams at that level, has already wrapped up the Southern Conference title and a year ago knocked off a Power 5 program. The Citadels not going to come in here and feel intimidated by any means, UNC coach Larry Fedora said. Theyll come in here expecting to win a football game.North Carolina (7-3) doesnt have any time to wallow after a 28-27 loss to Duke put its hopes for a second straight trip to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game in serious jeopardy, though Virginia Techs loss to Georgia Tech two days later kept them alive. The Tar Heels need to beat North Carolina State next Friday and have Virginia upset the Hokies to earn a spot in the Orlando, Florida-based game. But thats next week. Right now the priority is avoiding a slip-up against a lower-level opponent that beat South Carolina last year and has already sewn up a spot in the FCS playoffs that begin next week.Weve got our work cut out for us, no doubt, first-year Citadel coach Brent Thompson said. Its always one of those things we look forward to, an FBS school on an FCS schedule.---Some other things to know about the Citadel-North Carolina game:RUNNING BULLDOGS: Its no secret how The Citadel is going to try to win --- by controlling the clock with its triple-option offense, which is similar to the one Georgia Tech uses.dddddddddddd North Carolina, which allows an ACC-worst 222 yards rushing per game, gave up 334 yards on the ground to the Yellow Jackets but won the game 48-20. You hope theres enough carryover with our guys that it will help because we only have a couple of days to get ready, Fedora said.UNDER THE HOOD: North Carolina RB Elijah Hoods streak of 100-yard games ended last week when Duke held him to 75 yards on 13 carries, though he led the team with 58 yards receiving. Fedora says there were too many very basic things that we didnt do throughout that game which kept us from being efficient and just didnt make the plays to put the ball in the end zone.NO PICKS: North Carolinas defense has one of the more bizarre streaks in college football: The Tar Heels are the only FBS team without an interception. They may not get one this week, either, because The Citadel throws fewer than 10 passes per game.KEEPING IT TIGHT: Both teams are used to playing close games. Seven of The Citadels 10 games have been decided by 10 or fewer points, while the Tar Heels have played four games decided by a total of 11 points. Their record is 3-1 in those games with the lone loss coming last week to Duke.---Follow Joedy McCreary at http://twitter.com/joedyap.
