CLEVELAND -- John Greco figured hed go to training camp, try to win a starting job and hopefully be rewarded with a new contract. The Browns had other plans. Greco, who made 10 starts at left guard last season after Jason Pinkston contracted blood clots in his lungs, agreed to terms Tuesday on a five-year contract through the 2017 season. Financial terms were not disclosed. "It caught me off guard a little bit," Greco said. "Im thrilled and a bit relieved. Im happy the Browns have value in me." Pressed into the starting lineup when Pinkston fell ill, the versatile Greco did not miss an offensive snap over his first nine starts and solidified one of Clevelands strongest units. The 6-foot-4, 315-pounder was part of a line that helped running back Trent Richardson rush for a franchise rookie record 950 yards and protected rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden, who passed for 3,385 yards -- another team rookie mark. Greco is the first veteran entering his final season under contract to receive an extension from the Browns new regime. "One of our goals," said CEO Joe Banner, "is whenever possible to develop and keep our own players. Were glad in this case that it worked out, and was mutually beneficial." Although he has a new deal, Greco isnt guaranteed a starting job by first-year coach Rob Chudzinski. However, Greco showed last year that hes more than competent and is definitely the front runner as camp approaches. During spring practices, Greco rotated with Pinkston and Shaun Lauvao -- last years starter for all 16 games at right guard -- but took more snaps with the first-team offence than his teammates. Greco said winning a starting job "is huge" but he isnt taking anything for granted and promised to work hard to keep the Browns trust. "John is a solid, all-around teammate, on and off the field," Chudzinski said. "He was given an opportunity to play last year and really showed well. Hes respected in the locker room for his approach, consistency and team-first attitude." Greco, 28, spent three seasons with St. Louis, which drafted the Youngstown, Ohio, native in 2008. The Rams won just three games in his first two years before going 7-9 in 2010. Greco senses the Browns are on a similar plane to make a big jump in the win column this season. He noted the Browns were young last season and that Clevelands players have done some growing on and off the field. "Its a completely different feel," he said. "You can tell its ripe for a push to win some games. Thats the mindset and attitude going into camp." ---- NOTES: The Browns also signed free agent WR Naaman Roosevelt, who played 16 games the past three seasons with Buffalo. He has 25 career receptions for 396 yards with one touchdown. Roosevelt will be reunited with former Bills WR David Nelson, who signed as a free agent with the Browns earlier this year. Nelson will start camp on the physically-unable-to-perform list as he recovers from a knee injury that kept him out all of last season. On Monday, Nelson appeared to trip while making a cut on the Browns indoor turf. He was checked by a trainer and continued his workout. ... Steph Curry Shoes From China . -- In a span of seven Washington Redskins offensive plays, Justin Tuck sacked Robert Griffin III four times.WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Brandon Childress is trying to make a name for himself at Wake Forest.Thats quite a challenge for the son of Randolph Childress -- one of the best players in program history and a current assistant coach at the school.Brandon Childress called it a gift and a curse being my fathers son in an interview with The Associated Press, but is embracing the tough task that comes with living up to the family name.Randolph Childress made a school-record 329 3-pointers and scored 2,208 points -- more than every other Wake Forest player in the past 60 years -- from 1990-95 before becoming a first-round draft pick and beginning a 16-year pro career that included stints in the NBA and in Europe. No ones asking his son to duplicate those numbers, of course, though father and son do have some similarities in their game . Both are pure shooters, though itll be tough to match what Dad did in 1995.Randolph scored an Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament-record 107 points over three days, hitting a memorable jumper over a fallen-down Jeff McInnis after a crossover move before hitting the go-ahead leaner in the final seconds of overtime to beat North Carolina for the title.Randolph said Brandon earned the scholarship and hasnt been given anything because of family ties. Scout.com rated Brandon as a three-star recruit out of Wesleyan Christian in nearby High Point.I wanted him to go through the (recruiting) process and know Im not going to push you, and Im not the one thats bringing you here, Randolph said. You earned the right to be here.Instead, theyre asking more of him because of his familiarity with the university, the program and the system: Randolph has been on Wake Forests staff since 2012, and though he was born in Detroit, Brandon lists his hometown as Winston-Salem.The expectation for Brandon is that he comes in, he grasps the system and hes got a head start on all of our freshmen because hes been around the last twwo years, coach Danny Manning said.dddddddddddd. So his standard is probably a little bit higher than the other freshmen in that regard. From the outside, it might seem like the younger Childress was always headed to Wake Forest because he saw one of the key recruiters every day.Not the case, both father and son insist.Brandon said his dad didnt put a finger in my recruiting at all and didnt even accompany him on his official visits, but did offer advice on what to expect during the recruiting process. Randolph says that was because he knew his son had to come to a decision on his own.Stanford, Clemson, East Carolina, Charlotte and UNC Greensboro were the main other schools that showed interest, Brandon said.A lot of people think it was simple, but it really wasnt, he said. A lot of schools always wanted to say, `Ah, hes going to play for his father, when I told several coaches that right now, I dont want to play for my father -- I just want to go on my own, and a lot of schools didnt want to give me the opportunity.Turns out, the one school that offered him what he wanted most -- a chance to play in the ACC -- was the one where Dad works. There were always going to be people questioning or saying things -- `Oh, you just went there because of your dad -- and I wanted him to be able to say, your recruitment went through a coaching change (from Jeff Bzdelik to Manning) as well, so you earned that opportunity to come here, Randolph said. There were no strings to tie, there were no promises made or assumptions made that youre going to be here. All I told him was, youre going to work to get here, how difficult it was to get here and once you got here, you had to work even harder.---Follow Joedy McCreary at http://twitter.com/joedyap.
