SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Trainer Todd Pletcher continued his dominance of the 2-year-old filly division in New York this summer as Nonna Mela drew off to a very impressive six-length victory over Silvertoni in Fridays $200,000 Adirondack Stakes at Saratoga. The Grade 2 Adirondack had originally been scheduled to be run six days earlier but was postponed after heavy rains forced the cancellation of the second half of last Saturdays program.Pletcher had already won the first two stakes for juvenile fillies in New York this year in similarly one-sided fashion, the Astoria at Belmont with Bodes Dream and the Schuylerville here on opening day with Sweet Loretta. They, like Nonna Mela, are owned by the St. Elias Stable of Vincent and Teresa Viola.Nonna Mela prompted the early pace of Silvertoni under Javier Castellano before easing back off the leader after an opening quarter-mile in 21.81 seconds. Nonna Mela rechallenged for command near the quarter pole, disposed of Silvertoni leaving the furlong grounds, and steadily increased her advantage to the wire. Silvertoni easily outlasted the others, finishing three lengths in front of Olive Branch to be second.Libbys Tail, the 3-2 favorite in a field of seven juvenile fillies, and Ever So Clever were major disappointments, both racing within easy striking distance before coming up empty down the stretch.Nonna Mela, a daughter of Arch, returned $19.80 after completing 6 1/2 furlongs over a fast track in 1:16.83.Vinnie and Teresa made the decision to send all these babies in to Palm Beach Downs and get them started early, and its paid big dividends having experience going into a race like this, said Pletcher.Pletcher said he was relieved when the Adirondack was postponed on Saturday.I wasnt sure how she would have handled the track that day and kind of felt good when they did cancel, said Pletcher. She had a really good week leading up to this. And I thought Javier gave her a very clever ride. We felt she could be close, but he decided to ease her back early, and it worked out well. I wasnt completely surprised by this, but it was a pretty dominant performance. MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- A huge bust of Hall of Fame Dolphins coach Don Shula that appears to be chipped from a stone and brick wall. Splashy swirls of graffiti spray-painted two stories tall along half a football field. A photo of Miamis cityscape at night, reimagined with layers of texture and colors. These and many other works of original wall art await football fans at refurbished Hard Rock Stadium when Miami opens its home NFL season Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. The project to install large, eye-catching pieces of color and design throughout the stadium resulted from a visit last year by Dolphins owner Stephen Ross to Miamis Wynwood neighborhood, which is known for its vibrant street art, said Jessica Goldman Srebnick, CEO of Goldman Global Arts and curator of the stadiums works.Wynwood kind of created that mentality that anything can be art, Goldman Srebnick said. He loved the idea and that was it.Only a few of the 29,000 square feet of installations are sports-themed, including a piece by the Portuguese artist Alexandre Farto, known as Vhiles, that depicts Shula on a chipped-out wall of brick and stone near one of the stadiums bars.Former Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino, also a Hall of Famer and now a Dolphins special adviser, said Shula will love the piece. It looks like Coach when he was kind of upset at games sometimes. But the artist did a really great job and I know Coach will enjoy it, Marino said in an interview. To put art up in places that would be kind of bland in the stadium I think is going to be great for the fans. Its really unbelievable.Artist John Matos from the Bronx, New York, who is known as CRASH, explained his approaach from a lift platform on the stadiums first floor, where he was spray-painting an enormous wall in a distinctive, colorful graffiti style.dddddddddddd. He said he doesnt pre-plan his pieces, but rather does them by eye and feel.It just happened. Its totally by accident, he said. If I would have planned it, it would have been a disaster. All told, 18 artists from 10 countries have participated in the project, Goldman Srebnick said. They include German twin brothers How & Nosm, Australias Fintan Magee, Chiles Dasic Fernandez, and Eli Sudbrack and Christophe Hamaide-Pierson, a Brazilian/French team that works in tandem as assume vivid astro focus, all lowercase.Their curator said more art will be added in the future and some will change over time, just as in Wynwood. The boundaries of art are changing, said Goldman Srebnick, who created the Wynwood Walls outdoor street museum and co-founded Goldman Global Arts with artist Peter Tunney. The Fernandez wall painting, titled All The Way, depicts a helmeted football player, eyes fixed and determined, with rainbow-colored hands and a backdrop of stars, blue sky and clouds. Fernandez said the idea was to show how dreams can become reality with hard work -- in this case, a player finally realizing his goal of stepping onto the field. Its about the process to become anything you want to be in life, he said. It talks about all the process before you actually make it.-----Online: http://HardRockStadium.com/ArtUnexpected-----Follow Curt Anderson on Twitter: http://twitter.com/Miamicurt ' ' '
