KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kyle Seager gave the Seattle Mariners a chance with his bat. Then he let it slip away with his legs.Seager hit his 18th home run, but got picked off first base by Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez in the eighth inning Saturday in a 5-3 loss to the Royals.Seager connected for a three-run homer in the fourth. His one-out single in the eighth put runners at the corners.Thats when Perez trapped him.You cant get picked off in that situation, but hes pretty special back there. But, I obviously got off too far, Seager said. The pickoff was Perezs first of the season and 18th of his career for the reigning World Series MVP.Perez hit a solo home run off the foul pole in the seventh inning that gave the Royals a two-run lead.Yeah, you could say hes got our number this series, Mariners manager Scott Servais said. Weve left some breaking balls up to him and hes hit them. Its what he does.Hes a good player and we havent made our pitches, either. We havent executed there. We havent been getting our ball in spots and when you do that hes going to burn you. Hes a good hitter.Perez credited first baseman Eric Hosmer with the clutch play. That was Hosmer. He gives me a sign and I throw the ball right to him. I think he knows more than me.In turn, the All-Star first basemen praised the catcher.Thats all him, Hosmer said. Just knowing hes behind the plate, youve got to stay close to the bag at all times because hes so quick back there. The pitch takes him that way and he just throws it right back over there, just an unbelievable play and thats why Salvys the best. He changes the game, just completely took all the momentum away from them right there. First and third with one of their big hitters up, it was a huge play, he said.Edinson Volquez (8-8) gave up three runs and six hits in six innings.Kelvin Herrera pitched a perfect ninth for his first save since April 10, 2013.Wade Miley (6-6) gave up 10 hits. He left after Cheslor Cuthberts RBI single made it 4-3 in the sixth.Cuthbert also doubled and finished with two RBI.Nelson Cruz had two hits for Seattle.TRAINERS ROOMRoyals: LHP Jason Vargas threw a simulated game and manager Ned Yost was encouraged by the progress he showed. Looked good, really good, he said. Three pitches, good changeup, fastball with life. Good breaking ball, good first step. Yost anticipates Vargas could make a return in September.UP NEXTIn Sundays finale, former Royals draftee LHP Mike Montgomery (2-3) will get the start for the Mariners against RHP Dillion Gee (3-2). Montgomery was selected in the first round in 2008 and was part of the December 2012 trade with Tampa Bay that brought pitchers Wade Davis and James Shields to Kansas City. Probably cool for Mike, Servais said. I know he was drafted by the Royals, was a high prospect there. The anxiety of going back and pitching against your friends, your teammates, your former teammates, but hes been away long enough now, I hope that its kind of gone away and Im sure hell give us a good effort. DETROIT -- The Minnesota Twins are finally seeing the Hector Santiago they expected when they acquired him from the Los Angeles Angels at the trade deadline.Santiago held the Detroit Tigers to one run in 5 ? innings on Thursday as the Twins earned a split of the four-game series with a 5-1 win.Hector had to dance out of trouble a few times, but he did a nice job, Twins manager Paul Molitor said. If he pitches like this, his spot with us next year will take care of itself.Santiago lost his first four starts with the Twins, posting a 10.89 ERA, but hes 2-0 in the last four with a 1.82 ERA.I made some adjustments when I got here, but I ended up leaving a bunch of pitches over the plate, he said. Now Im back to trying to throw good pitches, not just getting strike one.Santiago only got one ground-ball out and three strikeouts.I had really good command of the fastball, so I was able to keep jamming guys up and in, he said. They kept popping it up, so I kept throwing it.The Tigers can little afford losses in the crowded AL wild-card race. Detroit came into the series with a 10-2 record against Minnesota. This is obviously not what we wanted, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. Any time you lose four out of seven, it isnt a good homestand.Mike Pelfrey (4-10) lost in his first major-league appearance since July 31. He started the game with a 60-pitch limit, but only lasted 36, giving up four runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings. The Twins took the lead in the second on Max Keplers RBI single, and he moved to third when Miguel Cabrera missed a pick-off attempt. Eduardo Escobar singled to make it 2-0, and Eddie Rosario beat out a bunt single.Juan Centeno bunted the runners over, and Pelfrey retired Byron Buxton. That brought up Brian Dozier with two on, two out and first base open. Despite his torrid numbers in the second half, Ausmus decided to pitch to him. With the bases loadedd, you dont have any room to maneuver, he said.ddddddddddddIf he grounds out to third, no one is asking me about it.Instead, Dozier lined a soft single to left to give the Twins a 4-0 lead and bring Blaine Hardy out of the bullpen. Our guys were going to attack Mikes fastball, Molitor said of Pelfrey, who spent the last three seasons with the Twins. That helped us get those two early runs, and then Dozier came up with that huge hit to get the lead from two to four. The Tigers had two runners on in the third, fourth and fifth innings, but Santiago escaped all three jams without allowing a run.TRAINERS ROOMTwins: 3B Miguel Sano flew back to Minnesota to have more tests run on his sore back.
