LANDOVER, Md. -- Vernon Davis can retire his jump shot, but the rest of his all-around game comes in handy for the Washington Redskins. The veteran tight end caught a touchdown pass as the Redskins (4-2) won their fourth in a row, and he could be counted on to start again next Sunday at the Detroit Lions (3-3) if Jordan Reed misses another game. Reed is out with a concussion, his sixth documented one in his college and pro career.Davis isnt Reed, especially at 32, but he showed against the Philadelphia Eagles that he can fill in when necessary. Quarterback Kirk Cousins said it was no surprise how well Davis played in his first start since signing with his hometown team.He still has elite speed, hes a great blocker, Cousins said. While Jordan is one of our best players and helps make our offense go, credit Vernon Davis for enabling our offense to stay at a high level today with the way he played.Davis was flagged for excessive celebration after his touchdown for shooting the football like a basketball, which he didnt know was a penalty. That will never, ever, ever happen again, Davis said.Along with the 13-yard TD, Davis had a 37-yard reception as the Redskins balanced their offense to compensate for not having their top receiving target. Pierre Garcon had six catches for 77 yards, DeSean Jackson four catches for 55 yards, and Jamison Crowder three catches for 52 yards and a touchdown.Third-string tight end Niles Paul got more snaps than usual, too, but the onus was on Davis to fill Reeds spot. Davis, who won the Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos last season, said the only thing that changed in his preparation was making sure his stamina was good to play an entire game.Whatever they need me to do -- whether its blocking, catching passes, Ill do it, Davis said. Ill do it full speed and give it my all. Here are other things we learned from the Redskins 27-20 victory over the Eagles:`AGGRESSIVE SCHEDULE: Already on a two-game skid, the Eagles (3-2) now get to face the NFLs lone unbeaten team, the Minnesota Vikings (5-0), coming off their bye, when the teams meet at Philadelphia next Sunday. It doesnt get much easier after that, with games at division rivals Dallas and the Giants, and then games against a trio of the NFCs elite: Atlanta, Seattle and Green Bay.The schedule gets aggressive fast, Eagles linebacker Jordan Hicks said.RUN FAST, YOUNG MEN: Alfred Morris, who? The Redskins seem to have found their groove in the running game with Matt Jones, Robert Kelley and Chris Thompson mixing up things. The trio combined for 231 yards and a touchdown against the Eagles as coach Jay Gruden and offensive coordinator Sean McVay have figured out how to maximize those backs different talents. Gruden called Jones a big plugger, and Kelley a great changeup.I think just us three guys coming together and believing in ourselves and going out there and doing things we know we can do, Kelly said. Thats why they got us here.ROUGH GOING, ROOK: Carson Wentz knows that defenses he faces the rest of the way have plenty of game video to watch and use for planning purposes. These are going to be great learning lessons for Carson, being able to mature as a quarterback, Eagles coach Doug Pederson said. After Wentz went 11 for 22 for 179 yards, directing an offense that produced a grand total of six points all afternoon against Washington, he acknowledged: Ive got to be better, especially late in the game. The Redskins might have provided a blue print for other Philadelphia opponents to follow. As Washington linebacker Ryan Kerrigan put it after getting two of his teams five sacks: We just knew we had to get pressure in his face.NOT MUCH DEFENSE: The Eagles defense needs to figure out ways to stop the run and get off the field on third downs. They gave up 230 yards on the ground on 33 carries, and allowed Washington to convert more than half of its third-down attempts, 7 of 13. Were not that good, where we can just go out there and show up, safety Malcolm Jenkins said, and just think were going to have success because of what weve done in the past.---AP Pro Football Writer Howard Fendrich contributed to this report.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFLAir Max 97 Undefeated China . The nine-time Big 12 champion Jayhawks are positioning themselves for another title, as they have run out to a flawless 6-0 mark in conference play thus far. ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Wilton Speight faked a handoff and delivered a strike to Tyrone Wheatley Jr. for a 21-yard touchdown as the tight end when from right to left. Later, he drilled the ball to Amara Darboh, putting it where only the receiver could catch it between a couple defenders as he zipped from left to right. He was so sharp and his team was up by so much that he didnt even have to play the whole game.Speight threw for 253 yards and two touchdowns in three quarters before watching No. 3 Michigan finish off Illinois 41-8 Saturday.Taking advantage of last weeks bye, Speight spent a lot of time studying himself.I watched all the six games, every snap, and took a lot of notes, he said. The Wolverines (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten) were leading 34-0 in the fourth quarter when Jim Harbaugh put backup quarterback John OKorn in the game and rested Speight.Speight, who completed 16 of 23 passes, threw a 3-yard pass to Jake Butt to score the first of four straight TDs to open the game.May have had one of his best games, Harbaugh said. It was windy out there. It was tough to throw. The Fighting Illini (2-5, 1-3) found that out as they were relegated to starting their third-string quarterback with a familiar name.Jeff George Jr., son of the former Illinois and NFL quarterback, was 4 of 15 for 95 yards with a TD, an interception and a fumble in his first start. He played because Wes Lunt and Chayce Crouch are injured. Its tough, but everybody has to have a start, Illinois coach Lovie Smith said. The running game could have helped him and other people had to play better.Illinois ran for 77 yards as a team -- 113 below their previous average -- and gained just 3.3 yards per carry. After Michigan botched a fake punt near midfield in the fourth quarter with a 34-0 lead, George threw a 43-yard TD pass to Malik Turner on the next snap and followed with a 2-yard conversion pass to Zach Grant.Karan Higdon scored on a 45-yard run on the ensuing possession and finished with 106 yards rushing on just eight carries for the Wolverines.dddddddddddd.THE TAKEAWAYIllinois: George got off to an awful start, but bounced back with some good throws. He was 0 for 7 in the first half with an interception. At one point, I looked up and there was zero yards passing, Harbaugh said.George fared better in the second half. He perfectly lofted a 43-yard pass to Turner in the third quarter and dropped another long pass to him just over safety Delano Hill early in the fourth for a TD. Georges father attended the game and gave his son a pregame pep talk.He told me to get my mind right and get my emotions in check, the freshman said. He said I belong out there.Michigan: The Wolverines seemed to let up in the second half for the first time this season. They were up big, leading 31-0 at halftime, but didnt continue to score at will as they did in other lopsided wins. Speight acknowledged that the team has to learn how to not give the opponent any sense of life after building a big lead.POLL IMPLICATIONSThe Wolverines will likely stay ranked No. 3, their highest spot in The Associated Press poll since 2006.JUST KICKING ITMichigans Kenny Allen made two field goals from 23 and 27 yards after missing his previous three attempts.HAMMERIN HANKBaseball Hall of Famer Hank Aaron accepted Harbaughs invitation to be the teams honorary captain, giving him a chance to visit his granddaughter, a student at Michigan.
