BENSALEM, Pa.-- Doctor J Dub scored a big victory for trainer Jena Antonucci, jockey Sheldon Russell, and owner Drawing Away Stable in the Grade 3, $300,000 Turf Monster at Parx Racing on Monday. Not only did Doctor J Dub score a $49.80 upset in the five-furlong turf stakes, he gave Antonucci her biggest win as a trainer and Russell his first stakes victory since he resumed his career in July following an eight-month injury-related absence.Doctor J Dub was claimed by Drawing Away Stable for $16,000 at Gulfstream Park in January. He made his first seven starts for Maria Borell before being transferred to Antonucci.Coming into the race, Doctor J Dub had been beaten in his last three starts in second-level optional-claiming races. The last two came in off-the-turf races at Saratoga. You cant enter on odds or other peoples opinions, Antonucci said. The horse was doing good, and we had weather delays at Saratoga twice where our races were taken off the turf.In the Turf Monster, Doctor J Dub engaged 3-1 Pool Winner for the early lead, drew clear on the far turn, and then lasted by a half-length over runner-up Two Notch Road. Pool Winner hung on for third, a length farther back.Power Alert, the 8-5 favorite, stumbled badly at the start. He finished strongly from well out in the track but could never make up the ground he lost leaving the gate and finished fifth.Doctor J Dub was timed in 58.73 seconds. His victory was the first in a graded stakes for Antonucci, who has been training since 2010.Russell suffered a serious shoulder injury in a training accident at Laurel Park last November. Following surgery and rehab, he was ready to begin his comeback in June, but his doctors advised him to give his shoulder another month to mend. This certainly is a big win, Russell said. I was away for such a long time. It was a huge surgery, but my shoulder feels fine now.Russell has long been one of the top riders in Maryland and is now 11 for 82 in his comeback. Doctor J Dubs victory may be just what it takes to jump-start his business.Greenwood Cup: Scuba takes marathon on leadScuba galloped the competition into the ground in the 1 1/2-mile Greenwood Cup, winning with something left under Kendrick Carmouche. The Grade 3, $200,000 Greenwood Cup was the first stakes win for Scuba, a 5-year-old son of Tapit.Scuba moved up to take a clear lead soon after the start.
