BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSUs Dave Aranda will be one of the nations highest-paid assistant football coaches in 2017, if not the name at the absolute top of the list.LSU released details of defensive coordinator Arandas new three-year contract on Wednesday. The deal will pay $1.8 million plus incentives in 2017, $1.85 million in 2018 and $1.9 million in 2019. Aranda will also retain the title of associate head coach that new full-time head coach Ed Orgeron gave him when Orgeron was named interim coach in September. We believe Coach Aranda is the best defensive coordinator in the country, LSU athletic director Joe Alleva said of the extension, which is still pending approval from the schools board of supervisors. We wanted to make sure he came home to an agreement that was fitting of the best.LSU finished the regular season ranked seventh nationally in scoring defense (16.4 ppg) and 12th in total defense (323 ypg) in Arandas first season with the Tigers. He came to the program after three strong seasons at Wisconsin where he consistently fielded one of the nations top defenses.LSUs defense surrendered 16 touchdowns in 11 games this season, which tied for third nationally, and the Tigers rarely allowed explosive plays. They tied for ninth nationally by allowing just 42 plays that covered 20 yards or more in the Tigers first season executing Arandas 3-4 base scheme. My family loves Baton Rouge, Aranda said in the release. We are excited to build on what weve started. LSU is a special place.Aranda made $1.2 million this season, the first of his original three-year deal with LSU. His new deal would top the reported 2016 salaries of some of the nations top coordinators, a group that includes Texas A&Ms John Chavis ($1.558 million), Clemsons Brent Venables ($1.431 million), Alabamas Lane Kiffin ($1.4 million), Louisvilles Todd Grantham ($1.3 million) and Auburns Kevin Steele ($1.1 million). There are 12 assistant coaches who make at least $1 million in FBS. Alabama and LSU are the only schools that have two coordinators both over $1 million.LSU will likely pay top dollar for its next offensive coordinator, as well, especially if Orgeron is able to add Kiffin to his staff. Kiffins name has circulated as a head coaching candidate for several schools, but he remains LSUs top choice as offensive coordinator if he is available.Aranda and former Tigers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron ($1.2 million) formed a rare coordinator tandem where both assistants made seven-figure salaries this season.According to USA Todays assistant coach salary database, only nine assistants made at least $1 million in 2015. Two of them, Auburns Will Muschamp and Alabamas Kirby Smart, are now head coaches. Muschamp was the nations highest-paid assistant coach last year at $1.6 million.Arandas buyout options are 40 percent of his remaining guaranteed base and supplemental salary if he accepts a non-head coaching position within 500 miles of Baton Rouge according to LSUs announcement. It would decrease to 15 percent outside of 500 miles away from the LSU campus. There will be no contract buyout after Dec. 1, 2019, on the deal that runs through March 31, 2020.Michael Perez Jersey .
