Bournemouth have quickly become one of the most interesting stories in the Premier League since their arrival in the top-flight last season.A club that teetered on the verge of bankruptcy while playing in the fourth division just a few seasons ago, have morphed into one of the feel-good stories around the league and look for more success Sunday against visiting Southampton.Much of the credit must go to manager Eddie Howe, who has spent wisely in the transfer market and deployed excellent tactics during his tenure on the south coast. So much so that he is garnering serious consideration for the England national team job at age 39.Howes Cherries (6-3-7) find themselves in 10th place heading into the weekend, having won two of their last three Premier League matches in impressive fashion.Their best win of the campaign, and perhaps in club history, came Dec. 4 as they battled back from a 3-1 second-half deficit to claim a wild 4-3 win over Liverpool at Vitality Stadium. Their most recent victory came on a first-half strike from Marc Pugh to knock off Leicester City.Howe, to his credit, has done a masterful job of keeping expectations in perspective during his clubs seemingly meteoric turnaround. Hes been able to keep focused on the task in front of him, and not think to much about European qualification. Were building nicely. The team is growing and getting better and theres still a lot more to come, Howe said. Were in a really good position to hopefully kick on and get better further. The clubs come so far so quickly, sometimes its maybe nice for others to sit back and enjoy the position were in. But for me, Im always looking for more and to achieve the next goal, and thats to try to beat Southampton. That chance to beat Southampton in the South Coast derby is now. The clubs are level on 21 points and Howe realises the significance of the derby. The atmosphere in last years games were terrific, he continued. The scenes were really enjoyable after the home win and the away game was not such a nice feeling. Its a big game for the supporters, its an important game for them.I think the more games we play, the rivalry will develop. Its a new thing and you need time to form those connections. They have tweaked their team but not their style -- they have healthy options and theyve done very well considering the amount of workload they have had from the cup games.Southampton (5-6-5), for their part, come into the clash one spot above Bournemouth on goal difference and are looking to extend their modest two-match unbeaten streak following last Sundays 1-0 win over Middlesbrough and Wednesdays scoreless draw against Stoke City.Stoke midfielder Marko Arnautovic saw red in the 23rd minute and the Saints attacked the Stoke goal in waves, but were unable to put one behind goalkeeper Lee Grant.Saints manager Claude Puel expects a fiery encounter this weekend.A game away is always difficult to play, with a little stadium, he said. Most important is the quality of the team, because they have good technical players and the profile of these players is technical. For every position is a good player and this is very important in the philosophy of this club. Southampton also try to have that. We will play a good team, with good players and a good philosophy. I think its interesting.Like his managerial counterpart, Puel also acknowledges the importance of the derby match for the supporters. The two cities are close, he added. All this gives a good intensity to the game and a good atmosphere. Of course the result is important for the fans, but also for us. We need to show a good concentration.Four of the last five competitive meetings between Bournemouth and Southampton have ended in a 2-0 win for the home side. Southampton have lost just one of their last seven league games against Bournemouth (five wins, one draw, one defeat), although this did come in their last meeting. There has been a red card in three of the last four competitive meetings between these sides, with two being shown to Southampton players. PHILADELPHIA -- Atlanta Falcons rookie strong safety Keanu Neal said he did nothing wrong on a controversial fourth-quarter hit against Philadelphia Eagles?wide receiver Jordan Matthews?--?a play that did not draw a penalty for helmet-to-helmet contact in the Eagles 24-15 victory.Im not trying to hit the guy in the head, Neal said. Thats not me. Never in the game of football will I ever try to do that. Im not a dirty player like that. But I went for the strike zone. I lowered my shoulder. And I felt like I hit him in the sternum. I dont think I had any head-to-head contact.Matthews, naturally, disagreed.Yes, I definitely think it was a penalty, Matthews said. My helmet was bent. I had to get a new face mask. I had to change out my face mask and my visor. I dont know what they saw, but at the end of the day, we got the win. So I will take a bloody lip if we get a win.Video replay appeared to show Neal leading with his helmet. Matthews remained on the ground for a moment grabbing at his face mask after taking the hit across the middle. The unsuccessful third-down play led to the Eagles attempting 55-yard field goal, which?Caleb Sturgis?missed. A penalty, of course, would have kept the Eagles drive alive.Falcons coach Dan Quinn didnt want to dig too deep into the play but stood behind his player.Yeahh, I dont have any thoughts on it other than just the way hes taught in the strike zone is were going to try and hit someone as hard as humanly possible, Quinn said.dddddddddddd. And if theres a hit to the head, then we didnt lower our strike zone low enough. But Ill go back and look, but I didnt get a chance to see. ... But I can tell you [Neal] is clearly becoming a very physical safety, in the box, out.By no means is he taught to go up high or do anything thats out of whack. The leverage tackling that we do, we want to absolutely throw fast balls in that strike zone. And if that target is on point, Ill applaud that hit as loud as I can.Eagles coach Doug Pederson was asked if he got an explanation on the no-call.No, Pederson said.Neal could be subject to a fine this week. But he maintained his innocence.Never do I attempt to hit someone in the head, Neal said. Thats just not the type of player I am. Im not there to play like that. [Coach Quinn] always talks about the strike zone. You guys know Im a physical player, but Im not trying to hit the dude in the head. They didnt call a flag. ... I dont think I hit him in the head, but I didnt attempt to hit him in the head. ' ' '
